How to label AI content on TikTok

Use TikTok’s built-in AI-generated content toggle before you post. Hashtags are not the label.

Use TikTok’s built-in AI-generated content toggle in the posting flow. That is the label. A hashtag, a caption aside, and a burned-in “AI” line are not the control. If you want Creativity Program eligibility on an AI clip, this toggle is the one the program is written around. This page is the tap path. It is not the originality essay.

TikTok’s own support text: turning the setting on does not affect distribution so long as the post does not violate Community Guidelines. The 2026 platform-policy recaps from SocialScale Hub, Vexub and Fliki say labelled AI stays eligible for the Creativity Program at the same rate, and undisclosed AI can mean removal or program suspension.

Decide whether this post needs the toggle

Walk the file, not the tool list.

Turn the toggle on when any of these is true:

    • The picture is photoreal and generated: a person, a room, a product scene a viewer could take as a camera original.
    • The picture is a real recording that AI meaningfully changed: a face swap, a body that does something the person did not do, a scene that did not happen.
    • The voice is a realistic AI performance or dub over a talking head.

    Leave it off when:

    • The file is a camera original and the only model in the timeline wrote captions, cropped, graded, or drafted a script.
    • The file is obviously animation, a graphic, or a slideshow no one would take as unedited reality — unless your legal counsel still wants a mark for another regime.
    • You would be false-labelling a real talking head because you used auto captions. False labels are not “extra compliant.”

TikTok requires creators to label realistic AI-generated images, audio, and video (Community Guidelines, as restated in TikTok support). Captions, colour, and crop are not that trigger. A photoreal generated face is.

Two other marks can exist on the same post and still do not replace the toggle:

    • C2PA Content Credentials. TikTok can auto-apply an AI-generated label when credentials survive ingest, or when you used a TikTok AI effect. Auto-apply is a backstop. Manifests die on re-encode. Flip the toggle yourself.
    • Article 50 / on-file line. An EU viewer may still need a perceivable mark at first exposure. Burn that into the file if counsel says so. It is not TikTok’s posting control.

If you generated the clip in the UGC video generator, the export is not labelled for TikTok. The posting flow is.

Apply it in the TikTok app

TikTok documents the mobile path. Do this on every AI post, not on “the ones that might go viral.”

    Video

    1. Tap Add post + at the bottom.
    2. Record, or upload the file from your device. Tap Continue (checkmark).
    3. Finish the edit if you must — but do not recrop a burned caption into the chrome here if you already checked safe area.
    4. On the post screen, tap More options ….
    5. Turn AI-generated content on.
    6. Confirm the control is on before you write the caption and hit Post.
    7. After publish, open the post as a viewer. You should see the creator AI-generated label (wording varies by app version: “creator labeled as AI-generated” / “Disclosed by creator as AI-generated”). If it is missing, the toggle did not take. Delete and repost with the setting on; do not hope a comment will do.

    Photo

    1. Tap Add post + and capture or select the photo.
    2. Tap Post settings at the bottom.
    3. Turn AI-generated content on.
    4. Post. Confirm the label on the live item.

    Notes TikTok’s own how-to implies:

    • This is an app path. Do not assume a desktop upload has the same toggle. If you publish from a scheduler that has no AI control, you have not labelled.
    • Official TikTok AI effects can auto-label. Third-party generates (including Versely) do not. You still toggle.
    • Once some auto-labels are on a post, you cannot take them off. Self-applying is cleaner than arguing with detection after the fact.

    Do not substitute:

    • #AIgenerated or #AIGC
    • “made with AI” in the caption
    • A sticker you designed
    • A C2PA file you hope survived

Those can be extra context. They are not step 5.

Creativity Program: the same taps, a money gate

If the account is in the Creativity Program (US terms live as Creator Rewards; last updated 20 July 2026 on the US document), the toggle is an eligibility switch for AI content, not a CPM modifier.

    Checklist after the taps above:

    1. Toggle on if the picture or voice is AI as defined above.
    2. Runtime still has to clear the program floor (one minute or longer for this pool). An 8-second labelled generate is labelled and still not a Rewards original.
    3. Originality still has to be yours. A labelled clone of someone else’s hook is labelled and still a review problem.
    4. Do not expect a different rate because a model rendered the frames. Those recaps say the rate is the same when the official label is used.

What you are not doing in this flow:

    • You are not hiding the badge to “protect RPM.” TikTok has said the setting does not affect distribution when the post is otherwise allowed. Viewers can ask to see less AIGC in Manage Topics; that is an audience filter, not a reason to skip the control.
    • You are not labelling a 20-second Shop clip and calling Rewards satisfied. Shop is a different cheque.

If you skip the toggle on a photoreal AI post, the stated consequence is removal or program suspension. Do not wait for a three-strike cartoon. Apply it at upload.

Vexub (2026) recaps harsher operational texture (detection, paused earnings). Plan on the documented rule: label, stay original, same rate. The taps do not change because a recap was spicy.

After you post: confirm, then leave it

The job is not done at Post.

    1. Watch the live label. If it is absent, the setting was off. Fix the post, do not argue in comments.
    2. Do not strip and repost to dodge auto-label. A re-encode that kills C2PA does not kill Community Guidelines. You still owe the toggle on realistic AIGC.
    3. Keep a record of which posts you disclosed. When a brand or a program review asks, “did you use the built-in label?” the answer is a screenshot of More options, not a hashtag search.
    4. Do not false-label camera weeks. The program is not asking for a generic “tools were used” sticker.

If EU viewers will take the person as real, burn a first-exposure line before you open TikTok, then still flip the toggle. Two marks, two jobs. If you need a studio seat to finish the file before the app flow, sign up. TikTok’s control still lives in TikTok.

    FAQ

Is a hashtag enough to label AI on TikTok?

No. The documented control is More options → AI-generated content (videos) or Post settings (photos). Hashtags and caption asides are not the built-in label.

Does the AI label hurt For You distribution?

TikTok’s support note: turning the setting on will not affect distribution as long as the post does not violate Community Guidelines. Skipping it on realistic AIGC is the removal risk.

Does Creativity Program pay less for labelled AI?

Not in the 2026 platform-policy recaps or the US Creator Rewards terms (20 July 2026). Labelled AI is eligible at the same rate. Unoriginal work is the separate review.
