6 apps for testing hooks before ad spend
CapCut, Meta Ads Manager, Creatify, Versely, Canva, and HeyGen test hooks cheap. Cut variants first. Then run a creative test inside the campaign.
A hook is the first two seconds. Ad spend is the rest of the month. Six apps let you find the open before you feed the auction a full budget. CapCut cuts six openings from one take. Meta Ads Manager runs a creative test inside a live campaign. Creatify batches actor-and-script variants. Versely is a hook pack and a one-tap open from a still. Canva is the branded first frame. HeyGen is the same face saying six scripts. This page is that list. It is not "how to beat Meta 2026." It is not a Versely landing page.
Testing a hook is not the same as launching an ad. CPM vs CPV for AI video ads is the bill after delivery. This page is the file you make so that bill hurts less.
What hook testing is before you spend
A hook is a self-contained open: a claim, a face reacting, a product doing one unexpected thing. It can be swapped without touching the body. That is why you test it first.
Three different "tests" get sold as the same thing.
A cut. You already have footage or a generated talking clip. You make six first-lines in an editor. Cost is time. CapCut and Canva live here.
A generate. You do not have footage. You render six distinct opens from a brief. Cost is credits or a seat. Creatify, Versely, and HeyGen live here.
A paid read. You put two to seven creatives into Meta and let delivery pick. Cost is media. Ads Manager's creative test lives here. It is not free. It is smaller than scaling a loser.
Do the cut or the generate before the paid read. Uploading one weak open and asking Advantage+ to save it is how a hook test becomes a learning-phase tax.
The six apps
1. CapCut. Start here if you already have a take. Duplicate the timeline. Change only the first two seconds: a different first line on screen, a different first shot, a different question. Auto captions so mute viewers still get the claim. Export six 9:16 files with names you will recognize in Ads Manager (hook-price, hook-problem, hook-demo). CapCut is free at a usable level for this. The AI video generator will also spin a still into a motion open if you never filmed. A June 2026 CapCut product-photo workflow is the honest demo: one still, several ad angles, then edit. CapCut later posted a Seedance 2.5 image-to-video tutorial on 16 September 2026 as launch-prep for a longer pass. Treat 2.5 as rolling, not as a promise on every login. You stay in CapCut because the hook is an edit. You leave when you needed six different faces and you had one clip.
2. Meta Ads Manager. Open Ads Manager when the files exist and the question is "which open survives delivery." Meta's creative test help (English, read 20 September 2026) is specific. You set the test on an existing campaign so high-performing ads can keep running and delivery learnings stay. Creative testing is supported on the Highest volume bid strategy only. At the ad, you open Creative test, make 2 to 7 copies, and you can swap creative on each copy after you confirm. Meta suggests using no more than 20 percent of the existing campaign or ad set budget on the test ads, spent per day across them. You pick duration and a comparison metric. Test ads start on the ad set schedule when you publish. The test schedule is when results are measured, not when delivery starts. This is a paid read, not a free sandbox. It is also not Advantage+ Creative, which enhances the file you already uploaded (crops, touch-ups, video expansion on the first 15 seconds toward 9:16 or 4:5). Enhancements are not a hook test. They are Meta editing your asset.
3. Creatify. Open Creatify when you do not have footage and you want many talking opens from one product URL. Creatify's pricing (read 20 September 2026) puts Free at 10 credits a month (2 video ads, watermark). Starter is $39 with 100 credits, 300 AI actors, 200-plus templates. Pro is $99 with 300 credits by default (up to 5,000 on the slider), 1,500 actors, 500-plus templates, Ad Clone from a URL, and an Ad Launcher for Meta. Pro also runs up to five generations in parallel, which is the hook-pack mechanic: five scripts, five faces, one afternoon. Creatify is a generate. It is not Ads Manager. Cloning a competitor ad is a starting file, not a winner. You still owe a paid read if you are going to spend.
4. Versely. Versely sits here because the hook is often a pack of distinct opens, not one prompt you re-roll. The branded hook pack is one brief, several vertical clips with the line burned in, charged once for the set. The UGC video generator is the talking-head version of the same idea: change the first line, keep the product body. If the hook is a visual gag from a selfie rather than a spoken claim, Finger Snap is one photo, about 18 credits discounted (35 full). If the hook is the product moving, Hailuo 2.3 Fast on image-to-video is 12 credits at 6s discounted (23 full). The wider picker is the AI video generator when the open is a generated shot, not a template. Versely is not Ads Manager. It will not tell you which hook bought a purchase. It is the app when you would rather render six opens on a credit pool than cut them from a take you never shot.
5. Canva. Open Canva when the hook is a branded first frame, not a talking head. Independent reads of Canva's 2026 AI table (The Rundown, 29 August 2026; Moda, 9 September 2026) put Pro at about $144 a year with a shared monthly allowance: up to 2,000 Standard, 200 Premium, or 20 Ultra AI uses. Image-to-video sits on Premium. High-quality video clips sit on Ultra. Free has no Ultra. You generate a short motion open inside the 9:16 template you were going to post anyway: logo, a claim you can still edit, safe area. You do not get Creatify's actor library. You get a hook that already looks like the shop. If you blow the Ultra bucket on six video opens, Magic Write and image gen starve the same month. For static hook cards (big type, one still), Canva is enough and cheaper than a video generate.
6. HeyGen. Open HeyGen when the variable is the script and the face should stay still. HeyGen's pricing (read 20 September 2026) lists Creator at $29 a month with 600 credits, Pro at $49 with 1,000, Avatar III at 3 credits a minute and Avatar IV/V at 20. Six 15-second IV/V hooks are about 30 credits if the meter is per minute of output, which is how that FAQ is written, not per file. Confirm the live meter before you batch. HeyGen is a generate of speech. It is a bad first app if the hook is a packshot slam or a Finger Snap. It is the right app if you need the same twin to say "I wasted $40 on…" and "Stop buying the drugstore one" and you will pick one for the paid read.
How to pick a cheap test from a real test
Write the question before you open an app.
- "I have a take, I need six first lines": CapCut.
- "I have six files, I need a delivery winner": Ads Manager creative test, Highest volume, 2 to 7 copies, cap the test slice near 20 percent.
- "I have a URL, I need talking opens": Creatify.
- "I have a still or a brief, I need a pack": Versely hook pack, UGC generator, or Finger Snap.
- "I have a brand kit, I need a first frame": Canva.
- "I have a twin, I need script variants": HeyGen.
Two apps is a week. CapCut plus Ads Manager covers most accounts that already film. Creatify or Versely plus Ads Manager covers accounts that do not. Canva plus CapCut covers a static-then-motion open. Six apps is how a hook test becomes six invoices.
A generate is not a winner. A winner is a file that survived a paid read on the metric you named. If you cannot name the metric, you are not testing. You are posting.
After a hook wins
Keep the body. Swap only the open on the next batch. That is the point of a hook: it is replaceable.
Mute still needs words. Burn the claim as a caption you can edit. Do not generate the price into the pixels of the still.
Meta can label generative ads under About this ad. Political and social-issue ads have a separate AI disclosure. A hook test does not exempt you.
When the job is a pack of opens from a brief, sign up and run the hook pack or the UGC generator. When the job is a take you already shot, stay in CapCut, then spend the small slice in Ads Manager. The list is six apps. The test is one variable.
FAQ
Is Advantage+ Creative a hook test?
No. Advantage+ Creative edits the asset you uploaded (crop, touch-up, expand). A creative test compares 2 to 7 copies you made, on Highest volume, with a budget slice Meta suggests you keep to 20 percent. One is Meta rewriting. The other is you comparing files.
Why is Versely in the middle, not first?
Because this page is the job. A hook pack is a real generate. Ads Manager is the paid read. CapCut is the cut. If you already have footage, you do not need Versely. If you needed six distinct opens and no take, you might.
Can I test hooks only on organic Reels?
You can watch completion. You cannot watch CPA. Organic is a taste test. The creative test in Ads Manager is the one that spends. Use organic to kill the embarrassing files. Use the paid read to pick the one you scale.
