    Marine dealer video: on-water demos that sell

    A helm-cam and drone pair beats dock photography for boat sales, and winterization content is the service revenue nobody is filming. Capture plan inside.

    A boat photographed at the dock is a boat nobody has seen move. Every listing photo on every marine marketplace looks the same: three-quarter bow shot, a helm close-up, a cockpit wide, and a transom. The buyer scrolls forty of those and learns nothing about the one thing they actually care about, which is what the hull does at 3,200 RPM in a two-foot chop.

    That gap is the whole opportunity. Two cameras and one demo day produce more usable footage than a year of listing photography, and the same day's footage also feeds the service department, which is where the margin actually lives.

    The two-camera rig, and why one camera fails

    A single camera can show you the boat or show you the ride. It cannot show both, and the buyer needs both in the same clip to believe either.

    Helm-cam goes on a suction or clamp mount just behind and above the operator's shoulder, angled to catch the wheel, the throttle hand, the gauge cluster and the horizon in one frame. This is the shot that sells: hand moves the throttle forward, the bow rises, the bow settles, the horizon steadies, the speed on the display climbs. Nobody has to narrate it. Buyers who have run boats read that sequence instantly, and buyers who have not read it as competence.

    Drone goes overhead and slightly behind for the running shot, then orbits at low altitude for the beauty pass. The drone answers the questions the helm-cam cannot: how much wake the hull throws, how flat it runs, how much room is actually on the swim platform, and whether the thing looks right on the water.

    If you are flying for a business, this is commercial operation under FAA Part 107: a certificated remote pilot, a Remote ID compliant aircraft, and visual line of sight maintained throughout. On open water, line of sight is the constraint that bites, because a boat on plane will outrun a pilot standing on a dock in under a minute. Put the pilot in a chase boat or on the demo boat, and brief the operator before anyone starts the engine.     Demo-day capture plan

    One boat, one morning, roughly two hours on the water. Run it in this order because the light and the water both get worse as the day goes on.

    1. Static walkaround, both cameras rolling, engines off. Dockside. Bow to stern, then a slow pan of the helm with the displays powered up. Sixty seconds of continuous footage, no cuts, no talking.
    2. Departure. Helm-cam only. Lines off, out of the slip, through the no-wake zone. This is unglamorous and it is the clip that converts trailer-boat buyers who are anxious about handling.
    3. The hole shot. Both cameras. Idle, then throttle up to plane. Do it three times so you have angles. Call out the RPM and the time to plane on the audio track even if you strip the audio later, because you will want the numbers for the on-screen text.
    4. Cruise pass. Drone leads, boat runs at cruise past the camera twice in opposite directions so you get both sides in matching light.
    5. Turns and chop. Helm-cam. Hard-over turn, then a run across a wake or a genuine chop if you have one. Do not fake this and do not oversell it. A buyer who watches your boat handle a real two-foot chop honestly will trust the rest of your footage.
    6. At rest. Drone orbit with the boat stopped, swim platform in use, seating deployed. This is your thumbnail and your marketplace hero image.
    7. Return and shutdown. Helm-cam. Docking, trim up, cover on.

    Seven segments, two cameras, and you leave with material for the listing video, six to ten vertical shorts, a hole-shot clip for paid social, and a "how she handles" piece per model that stays useful until the model year changes. The same one-shoot-many-assets logic that works for car dealership video marketing and motorcycle dealerships transfers directly, except your inventory moves and theirs does not.

    The safety gear has to be visible

    This is the part that gets marine content complained about, reported, and occasionally screenshotted by a competitor. Federal rules require a wearable Coast Guard approved life jacket for every person aboard, and vessels 16 feet and over also carry a throwable device. Federal rules also require operators of recreational vessels under 26 feet that have a cut-off switch installed to use the link when operating on plane or above displacement speed. Children under 13 must wear a life jacket on a moving vessel unless they are below deck or in an enclosed cabin, and some states set their own age and wear requirements that override that.

    The practical shooting rules that follow:

    • Everyone in frame wears a PFD on every running shot. Inflatable belt packs are fine and read as professional rather than nervous. A demo video where the salesperson is the only one wearing one looks worse than nobody wearing one.
    • The cut-off lanyard or wireless fob is visible in the helm-cam frame. It is a two-second detail that signals you know what you are doing.
    • The throwable is stowed where the camera can see it, not buried in a locker.
    • Do not film speed in a no-wake zone. Someone will know that stretch of water. Someone always does.
    • Check your state's wear rules for minors before any shot with a child aboard, because the federal baseline is the floor, not the ceiling.

    None of this costs you anything creatively. It removes an entire category of complaint and it makes the footage usable in paid placement, where a reviewer who is not a boater will still notice a bare torso at 40 knots.

    Winterization is the content nobody makes

    Your service department carries the year, and the two windows where a customer decides whether to book with you or with the yard down the road are haul-out and spring commissioning. Almost nobody films either.

    Shoot the winterization sequence once, as one clip per step, in the shop, in September. Stabilizer into the fuel, fogging the engine, lower unit lube pulled and inspected, antifreeze through the raw water circuit, batteries out and on a tender, bilge drained, canvas off and stored, shrink wrap on with the vents in. One step, one clip, twenty to forty seconds, shot on a phone with clean audio from the tech who does the work.

    That is eight to ten assets, and they post through October and November on a schedule you set in advance. Add one honest "what a skipped winterization costs" piece using a real cracked block or a real corroded lower unit from your own shop floor, not a stock image. In March you reverse the sequence for commissioning. The year-round seasonal content system is the calendar structure this drops into.

    Title cards do the heavy lifting here, because the audio is a shop and the viewer is on a phone in a parking lot. Build one card template, save it as a reusable draft, and swap the copy per step.     A generated hull is a misrepresentation the moment a buyer walks the dock and finds a different transom door, different upholstery, or an option package that only existed in your render. The b-roll generator is for the water, the weather and the sky. It is not for the inventory.

    FAQ

    Does a phone work instead of a dedicated helm-cam?

    For dockside and shop content, yes, and the shop sequence should be shot on a phone because it is faster. For running shots, no. Spray, vibration and the mount problem all argue for a small action camera with a proper suction or rail mount, and the audio from a phone at speed is unusable. You are not buying image quality, you are buying a mount that will not end up in the water.

    How do we handle a listing that sells before the video is finished?

    Cut the model-specific version and a hull-agnostic version from the same footage. "How the 24 handles" outlives any single unit and keeps working after the inventory turns. Only the walkaround and the interior details are unit-specific; the hole shot, the cruise pass and the chop test belong to the model. That split is what makes a demo day pay for itself more than once.

    Can we run this content as paid social, or is it organic only?

    Both, and the boundary is the claim rather than the format. Performance figures need to be stated as observed conditions rather than as specifications, financing language triggers its own disclosure obligations, and any option shown has to be one you can sell on that unit.
