When a 4K export is worth the credits
Most social delivery wastes the 4K premium. The three cases that earn it, the reframe arithmetic behind them, and a per-destination resolution rule.
Resolution is not a checkbox on Versely. It selects a different per-second rate out of the same model's price table, and that rate then multiplies every second of the clip. So "export in 4K" is not a one-time upgrade fee you pay at the end. It is a decision that compounds with length, and it compounds by a different amount on every model you might use.
That last part is the bit almost nobody checks. There is no such thing as "the 4K premium" on Versely — there are as many premiums as there are resolution-banded models.
The premium is a rate switch, and it is not one number
Fifty video models in the catalog publish separate credits-per-second rates per resolution band. When I checked the current snapshot, the gap between a model's cheapest band and its dearest ran from about 1.3× at the flattest end to close to 20× at the steepest. What exporting in 4K instead of 1080p costs recomputes that spread on every build, so treat the page as the live figure and this paragraph as the shape.
Two examples make the range concrete. LTX 2.3 Text to Video Fast bills 4 credits a second at SD/HD and 16 at 4K — a clean 4×, so a ten-second clip is 40 credits or 160 depending on one dropdown. Grok Imagine Video publishes SD at 5 credits a second and groups HD and 4K into a single band at 7. On that model, 4K genuinely costs nothing beyond leaving SD behind.
Three things follow that are worth internalising before you set a house default:
- The premium multiplies with duration. It is not paid once. A one-second test at the top band is noise; a twenty-second hero cut at the top band on a steep model is one of the largest single charges available.
- A model's standard rate tells you nothing about its top rate. Two models can sit within a credit of each other at SD/HD and be four times apart at 4K.
- Some models don't charge a premium at all. Where the price matrix groups HD and 4K into one band, the higher resolution costs nothing extra on that model. Check before you assume.
The three cases that earn it
Everything below is a case where the extra pixels do work that survives the trip to the viewer. If your deliverable is not on this list, the premium is buying storage.
Large-format playback. Event screens, retail displays, trade-show loops, anything that will be watched on a television across a room. Resolution only matters relative to screen size and viewing distance, and this is the one category where both variables move against you. If the finished file will ever be more than about a metre wide, master it high.
Footage that will be reframed. This is the strongest case and it is arithmetic rather than taste — see the next section.
Paid placements you intend to reuse. Not because an ad platform shows 4K, but because a paid asset gets re-cut, re-crossposted and re-versioned for months, and because every distribution pipeline re-encodes what you hand it. The source you upload is not the source the viewer receives. A cleaner master survives one more generation of transcoding than a marginal one does, and paid creative reliably goes through more generations than organic does.
Note what is not on the list: a single vertical clip that will be posted once to a feed and never touched again. Every social platform re-encodes uploads to its own ladder. The premium there buys you nothing the viewer can see, on the most common job in short-form.
The reframe case, worked
If a clip will be cropped from landscape to vertical later — or the reverse — the master resolution decides whether the crop is a reframe or a rescue.

A 9:16 window cut from a 4K landscape frame is 1215 pixels wide. That clears a 1080-wide vertical deliverable with room left over, which means you can slide the crop to follow the subject and still not run out of pixels. The same window cut from a 1080p master is 607 pixels wide and every vertical export from it is an upscale.
So the rule is not "shoot 4K". It is: if one generation will ship in more than one aspect ratio, master it at the higher band; if it ships in exactly one ratio, don't. Changing a video's aspect ratio is cheap. Inventing pixels that were never rendered is not.

Two operational notes on that table. First, "the model's standard band" is model-specific: some catalogs group SD and HD together, so 1080p is already included at the base rate, and some price them apart. The band labels on each model page are the catalog's own. Second, drafting at the lowest band and switching up for the final render is the single cheapest habit here, because you pay the premium once rather than on every attempt.
When upscaling later is the cheaper route
There is a third option people forget: render at the standard band and upscale the video to 4K afterwards. That is not free and it is not the same transaction — it is one standard-band render plus one upscale job on a separate model, against one top-band render.
Which wins depends entirely on your model's multiplier. On a model where 4K is 1.3× the standard rate, the upscale is almost never worth the extra step. On a model where it is 4×, it frequently is, especially for a long clip where the premium runs across every second. Work out both totals rather than assuming, and remember that an upscaler synthesises detail rather than recovering it, which matters on text, logos and small faces.

If the platform re-encodes everything, why master high at all?
Because re-encoding is lossy and it compounds. A single upload of a single-ratio clip goes through one generation and the premium is wasted. An asset that gets cropped, re-cut and re-uploaded across platforms goes through several, and each one starts from whatever the previous one produced. The reuse tail is what justifies the master, not the first post.
Does the resolution premium apply to native audio too?
No. Where a model prices native audio it is a separate switch on the same per-second rate, with its own trade-offs, and it behaves differently from the resolution one because the additive route — generate the audio separately, then attach it — is priced on a completely different principle.
