Your generated subject never blinks
An unblinking subject is the tell that survives every other fix. Schedule eye behaviour in the prompt, or chain short clips at natural blink points.
You can fix the hands, grade the skin, lock the camera, and the clip will still feel generated if the eyes never close. An unblinking three-to-five-second close-up is not a small omission. It is the one surface viewers are best trained on, and they do not need a vocabulary for it. They just stop believing the person.
This is not a temporal consistency crawl and it is not a morph. The face can hold, the blink simply never arrives, or it arrives as a slow, simultaneous lid-drop that looks like a shutter, or it arrives three times in a second because you wrote "natural blinking" and the model took that as a texture. Absent, late, or over-eager eye behaviour is its own defect. The fix is to schedule it in the prompt like any other action, and when that fails, to cut on a blink the way an editor already would.
Why the lids get dropped
A blink is small, fast, and rarely the subject of the training clip's caption. The sampler spends its motion budget on the things the prompt named (a smile, a head turn, a line of dialogue) and on the camera. Eyelids are high-frequency, low-priority, easy to hold open because the conditioning still almost always has them open. Image-to-video from a hero portrait is the worst case: you fed it a stare, and a stare is a very stable thing to continue.
Wrong blinks are the other half of the tell:
- The shutter. Both lids travel as a single texture, too slow, no lash break. It reads as a dissolve across the eyes.
- The flutter. "Natural blinks" with no timing produces a burst, then a stare.
- The delayed blink. The line ends, a beat passes, then a theatrical close. Humans blink around speech, not after a rest.
- One eye only, or a blink that changes the iris. That is morph wearing a blink costume. Treat it as a local repair or a reroll, not as a timing problem.
Hands, teeth and signage are the other inspection surfaces. Eyes belong on that list the moment the face is large in frame. A mid-shot can hide a missing blink. A talking-head close-up cannot.
Schedule the blink; do not request "natural eyes"
"Natural eye blinks, realistic, authentic" is a style keyword. It does not land a blink on a frame. Production prompts that actually produce one name a count, a moment, and a quality, the same way they name a head tilt.
The shape used in Versely's own talking-head workflows is specific rather than atmospheric. The NYC street interview write-ups time it: a listener gets "a single natural blink" on the question, then the answer runs. The podcast promo asks for "soft blinking" next to nods and a locked camera, not as a solitary magic word. That is the register to steal.
A brief that schedules the lids:
She holds eyeline with camera and speaks the line in one breath.
At about 1 second she blinks once, a small fast blink, then keeps the look.
A second small blink as she finishes the line.
No extra blinks, no slow lid drop, no change to eye colour or eye shape.
Camera: locked-off on a tripod.
Rules that keep this from becoming a flutter:
Count them. One blink in a three-second clip. One or two in a five-second clip. Do not write "blinks throughout." You will get a texture.
Put them on a beat. On the listen, on the swallow, on the end of a phrase, on a glance down to a prop. A blink that lands on a motivation is harder to see as a trick and easier for the model to attach to an action it already understands.
Describe the quality once. "Small, fast, both eyes, no freeze on the close." If you need a slow blink (tired, sedated, a character beat), say "slow tired blink" and accept that it will be a visible action, not a hidden one.
Do not fight the still with a closed-eye first frame unless you want the shot to open on a blink. A still with eyes shut plus "she blinks" is a request to open the eyes, which is a different, often uglier move.
Keep the rest of the face boring. A huge smile plus a scheduled blink is how teeth and lids fail on the same frame. If the mouth is working hard (lipsync, a laugh), put the blink on the listen either side of the line, not on the widest mouth shape.
Some families ignore negatives; naming "no slow lid drop" in a negative field may be a no-op. Put the positive schedule in the main brief regardless.
When prompting is not enough, cut on the blink
Editors already cut on blinks. The lid close is a tiny black frame the eye accepts as a join. You can manufacture that join on purpose.
Generate short. Three to five seconds, one line or one listen per clip. A twenty-second unblinking stare is twenty seconds of the tell. A four-second clip with one scheduled blink is a complete shot.
Take the clip that blinked. If take two has a usable blink and take one has a better smile, you are not required to pick a single file. You are required to pick a face that looks alive.
Chain at the blink, not at a freeze. Extract a frame during the close or the first frame of the reopen. Clean it if the last frame of the clip is dirty (the handoff-frame pass). Feed that frame as the first frame of the next clip, or as both ends of a first-last-frame generation if you need the next beat to land on a known still. The join sits inside an action the viewer already believes.
Trim off the stare. If the blink landed at 1.2 seconds and the rest is a held look that dies, trim to a frame or two after the reopen. A two-second talking-head with one blink beats a five-second one without. The editor's 480p preview pass runs at no credit cost and carries a short per-user cooldown, so you can hunt the cut without paying for a finishing render on every experiment. The final export is charged once.
Do not stitch two unblinking clips and hope the cut implies a blink. A cut between two stares is just a shorter stare. You need one real close in the picture, even if it is only a few frames.
If the lids morph rather than close (iris jumps, extra crease, one eye lags into a wink you did not ask for), that is a local geometry failure. Mask the eye region and repair, or reroll. Chaining a morphing blink forwards the morph.
Shot choices that make a missing blink less visible
Prompting and cutting are the direct fixes. Framing decides how much they have to do.
- Go wider. A medium shot hides lids. Use it when the line is the point and the face is not the product.
- Give the eyes somewhere to go. A glance at a mug, a note, an off-camera listener is motion the model will spend budget on, and it often drags a blink with it. A dead eyeline into the lens is the stare.
- Cut away. Reaction, product, the other person in the interview. You do not need six seconds of continuous sockets.
- Do not pair a missing blink with other inspection surfaces. Unblinking and bad teeth and a morphing collar is how a clip becomes unusable in three different ways at once. If the face is hero, simplify wardrobe and keep the mouth gentle.
Avatar and lipsync pipelines sometimes fare better because the mouth is driven and the face is a rig, but they will still hold a stare if you never ask for a blink and never cut. The schedule still belongs in the brief.
FAQ
Is a clip without a blink always unusable?
No. A one-second insert, a whip into a product, a wide, a shot where the subject looks down the whole time: nobody is waiting for lids. The defect is a held close-up or a talking head that lasts long enough for a real person to have blinked and this one did not. Length plus face size is what makes it a tell.
Why did "blink naturally every few seconds" produce a flutter?
Because you specified a rate and the model treated it as a texture to fill the clip with, not as two events. Drop the rate. Name one moment. If you need two blinks, write two moments ("at one second", "as she finishes"), not a frequency.
Can I add a blink in post instead of regenerating?
A painted or interpolated blink is possible and usually looks like one. Frame interpolation in particular is bad at events that happened entirely between two source frames; a blink is exactly that class of event. Prefer a real close from a take, or a scheduled blink in a short new generation of the same still. Compositing a stock blink over a generated face is how you get a lid that does not match the crease.
Should the still have the eyes mid-blink?
Only if the shot should open mid-blink, which is rare. A half-closed still tends to lock the lids in that half-state or produce a slow shutter as the model argues with it. Start with open eyes, schedule a fast blink after the opening frames, and trim any settle at the head if the face snaps into the look. The still is the identity. The prompt is the lid timing.
