    Where YouTube puts your AI label

    Since May 2026, photorealistic AI labels sit below the long-form player and overlay Shorts. Unrealistic and minor edits stay in the expanded description.

    Selecting YouTube's altered-content disclosure at upload does not produce one outcome. It produces one of two, and which one you get is decided by how photorealistic the video is, not by the topic and not by who applied the label.

    For photorealistic, meaningfully AI-altered content, the label is prominent: directly below the player on long-form, as an overlay on the video on Shorts. For unrealistic, animated, or only slightly altered content, it sits in the expanded description. Same checkbox. Two very different levels of visibility.

    Until May 2026, the prominent placement was reserved for realistic content on sensitive topics such as health, news, elections, or finance. That split is gone. If you are producing photoreal video, plan for a visible label on every upload that requires disclosure, not only the serious ones.

    Two placements, photorealism decides

    You do not choose the placement. There is no second setting. YouTube decides it from the content.

    Prominent placement is the one viewers actually see. In its May 2026 update, YouTube moved the disclosure for photorealistic and meaningfully AI-altered or generated content to sit directly below the video player, above the description, on long-form. On Shorts, it overlays the video itself. YouTube described this as the single label format for that class of content.

    Expanded-description placement is the quiet one. Descriptions are collapsed by default, and the label sits in the portion a viewer has to open. YouTube keeps this for content that is unrealistic, animated, or only slightly altered.

    YouTube's Help Center describes the same split: a player-adjacent label for photorealistic AI content, and a description label for non-photorealistic or animated content. How the footage looks decides it. Subject matter does not.

    Two videos can use the exact same production process, the same model, the same pipeline, and land in different placements if one is photoreal and the other is obviously stylised. Two more can use completely different processes and land in the same placement, because both are realistic. The placement question cannot be answered by looking at the pipeline. It has to be answered by whoever knows what the video looks like.

    It also means the disclosure decision and the placement outcome are two questions in sequence. Whether a label is required at all comes first. YouTube publishes an explicit exemption list covering animation, beauty filters, colour adjustment, special effects, cloning your own voice, caption generation, audio repair, upscaling, and production assistance. A video that lands on that list does not reach the placement question. A video that does not land on it does, and then photorealism and format take over.

    What May 2026 changed

    Two things moved. Placement got more consistent, and labelling stopped depending only on the upload toggle.

    Placement. The 2024 rule, announced when YouTube first required altered-content disclosure, put a more prominent player label on realistic content that touched sensitive topics, and put everyone else in the expanded description. That is the version a lot of workflow docs still repeat. It is not current. Photoreal comedy, photoreal product demos, photoreal explainers: if the footage could be mistaken for a real person, place, or event, the label is now on the main stage.

    Detection. YouTube still requires you to disclose realistic AI at upload. It also auto-applies a label when its systems detect significant photorealistic AI use, when the file was made with YouTube's own GenAI tools, or when the file carries C2PA metadata. Automatic labelling is an additional mechanism, not a substitute for the toggle.     Why the prominent placement is worth planning for

    If the label is going to appear on or under the video, three things follow.

    It is visible during the hook. The most contested seconds of any video now contain an additional element you did not compose. It is not large, but it is there, and if your opening frame is already carrying burned-in text, a logo and a caption, the label is one more thing in the composition. Knowing that at storyboard stage is cheaper than noticing it on a published video.

    It sets viewer expectations before your narration does. A viewer who sees the label early has been told the footage is synthetic before you have had the chance to say so. On a serious topic that is a favour, because it removes the possibility of a viewer feeling misled later. The videos that go badly are the ones where the audience works out the footage is generated after investing attention in it. The label ends that failure mode.

    Getting there first reads better. If the label is going to appear anyway, a creator who addresses it in the opening line is confirming something the viewer already sees rather than being caught by it. That is a small editorial move with a real effect on comment sections.

    None of this argues for avoiding photorealism. It argues for knowing which of your videos will carry a visible label, which is a question you can answer at the brief: is this photoreal, and does it require disclosure?

    What the label does not do

    It does not cost you reach or revenue. YouTube's disclosure page states that disclosing AI content will not limit a video's audience or impact its eligibility to earn money. The May 2026 blog repeats the same point: a disclosure label alone does not change how a video is recommended or whether it is eligible to earn money.

    That should settle the debate that comes up constantly. The label is not a penalty and it is not a downranking signal. If you are weighing whether to disclose, the platform has already told you the disclosure side of the ledger is empty.

    What genuinely threatens a channel is a different policy. YouTube's inauthentic content rule, renamed from "repetitious content" in July 2025, targets mass-produced and templated output that is easily replicable at scale, and it does not care whether AI was involved or whether you disclosed. A disclosed, labelled, photoreal documentary can pass it. An undisclosed, unlabelled, entirely conventional slate of near-identical uploads can fail it.     Keeping the two apart is the useful split. Disclosure is a labelling question YouTube says has no reach or revenue cost. Originality is a monetization question with real consequences.

    Planning for the visible label

    Four things to put in place, none of them expensive.

    1. Add a photorealism flag to the brief. One field, answering whether a reasonable viewer could take the footage as a real person, place, or event. That flag predicts the prominent placement.
    2. Compose the opening frame with the label in mind for anything flagged. Leave the region YouTube uses uncluttered rather than stacking your own elements into it. On Shorts the overlay sits on the video; on long-form it sits just below. Either way, do not pack the first frame with chrome.
    3. Write one line of narration that names the synthetic element for flagged videos. It costs a few seconds and converts a passive label into an active statement.
    4. Do not rely on automatic labelling to satisfy the requirement. YouTube also applies labels from C2PA provenance metadata and from its own generative tools. Metadata frequently does not survive a normal export and upload path, so relying on it is relying on something you have not verified.

    If you publish the same asset across several platforms, the placement logic differs everywhere and does not transfer.     Can I choose which placement my label gets?

    No. YouTube determines placement from the content itself, and there is no creator-facing control for it. Photorealistic, meaningfully altered content gets the prominent placement. Unrealistic, animated, or only slightly altered content goes to the expanded description. Shorts overlay the video; long-form sit the label below the player.

    Does a visible label hurt click-through or watch time?

    YouTube states the disclosure does not limit audience reach or monetization eligibility, and that a label alone does not change recommendations or earning eligibility. There is no published data on click-through specifically, so treat any claim in either direction with suspicion. What you can control is whether the label surprises the viewer, and addressing it in the opening line removes that.

    If YouTube auto-labels my video from metadata, do I still need to declare it?

    Yes. Automatic labelling from provenance metadata, from YouTube's own tools, or from internal detection is an additional mechanism, not a substitute for your obligation to disclose where the rule applies. Metadata also frequently does not survive a normal export and upload path, so relying on it is relying on something you have not verified.

    Where does the label appear for Shorts?

    For photorealistic, meaningfully AI-altered Shorts, YouTube places the label as an overlay on the video. For unrealistic, animated, or only slightly altered Shorts, it stays in the expanded description, which on Shorts is even further from a casual viewer's path than on long-form.
