This is not a promise about how carefully we handle your upload. There is no upload. The file you choose is read into memory by your own browser, processed there, and handed back as a download — the tool has no server component and makes no network request with your data.
- Nothing is stored. We never receive the file, so there is no copy to retain, no retention period to disclose, and nothing to delete on request.
- Nothing is transmitted. No upload endpoint, no analytics payload carrying file contents, no third-party processor.
- You can verify it. Load this page, disconnect from the internet, and use the tool. It still works, because everything it needs is already on your machine.
- Nothing persists after you close the tab. Files are held in page memory only — not in local storage, not in a cache, not in a database.
A note on wording, because it matters: we do not describe these tools as “encrypted.” Encryption protects data that travels to somebody else's computer. Your file does not travel, so there is nothing to encrypt and nothing to intercept — which is a stronger guarantee than encryption, not a weaker one. The page itself is served over HTTPS like the rest of the site.
This makes the tools safe for material you are contractually barred from uploading to third-party services — client footage under NDA, unreleased campaign assets, anything covered by a confidentiality clause.
How it works
1. Drop image or short video
PNG, JPEG, or WebP preferred. Video up to 45 seconds is accepted for a best-effort keyed re-encode, scaled to 1280 px on its long side.
2. Tune key, tolerance, edge, spill
Default key is studio green. Soft edge and spill suppress clean hairlines and fringe.
3. Export PNG or composite
Transparent PNG keeps alpha. Composite places the subject over a background you choose. Video needs composite.

What is chroma key?
Chroma key removes one colour from a picture so something else can show through. A subject is shot in front of a green or blue screen, and every pixel close to that colour is replaced with transparency or a new background. This tool measures how far each pixel is from your key colour: tolerance sets how far still counts as screen, soft edge fades the border, and spill suppress pulls the green or blue tint off hair and shoulders.
How is this different from the Background Remover?
Background remover uses an on-device subject segmenter for ordinary photos. This chroma key tool punches out pixels close to a key colour. It is built for flat green or blue screens, not busy real-world backgrounds. Use the remover when there is no screen; use this when you shot against chroma fabric or paint.
What algorithm does it use?
RGB Euclidean distance to the key colour, with a soft edge falloff past the tolerance and a simple spill suppress that pulls the dominant key channel toward luminance on near-key pixels. It is honest studio keying, not a neural matte.
Does video export keep transparency?
Usually no. Most browser MediaRecorder paths write WebM or MP4 without a reliable alpha channel. For video, switch to Composite and pick a background. For a transparent result, export a still PNG from an image.
Why is video only best-effort?
The tool keys each frame on a canvas and re-encodes with MediaRecorder. That is a lossy re-encode capped at short lengths so the tab stays usable. It is not a frame-accurate NLE export. Prefer image PNG when quality matters.
How long a video can I key?
Up to 45 seconds. Longer files are refused so the tab stays responsive. Frames are keyed at up to 1280 pixels on the long side and re-encoded in your browser as WebM or MP4, whichever it supports. The video file has no transparency, so pick a background image to composite over.
Can I pick blue screen instead of green?
Yes. Use the key colour picker or the Blue / Chroma blue presets. Raise tolerance if the screen is unevenly lit; raise spill suppress if fringe tint remains on edges.
