    Social Media Character Counter

Paste a caption, post or bio and see it counted against 14 platform limits at once, each the way that platform counts. X uses its open-source weighting (links count 23, emoji 2, Chinese, Japanese and Korean characters 2), Bluesky counts what you see, Threads counts emoji by their bytes, and the rest are checked strictly so an emoji never surprises you. It also counts and de-duplicates hashtags, lists mentions, previews where Instagram, LinkedIn and TikTok cut to "... more", and fixes Instagram line breaks. Nothing you type leaves the page.

Character limits by platform (September 2026)

From each platform's help centre or developer docs. Rows marked "not official" are limits the platform does not publish; the number is the widely reported one. Instagram also caps posts at 5 hashtags.

Your files never leave your device

Free to use, with no account, no usage limit and no watermark, because the work runs on your device rather than on our servers.

This is not a promise about how carefully we handle your upload. There is no upload. The file you choose is read into memory by your own browser, processed there, and handed back as a download — the tool has no server component and makes no network request with your data.

    • Nothing is stored. We never receive the file, so there is no copy to retain, no retention period to disclose, and nothing to delete on request.
    • Nothing is transmitted. No upload endpoint, no analytics payload carrying file contents, no third-party processor.
    • You can verify it. Load this page, disconnect from the internet, and use the tool. It still works, because everything it needs is already on your machine.
    • Nothing persists after you close the tab. Files are held in page memory only — not in local storage, not in a cache, not in a database.

A note on wording, because it matters: we do not describe these tools as “encrypted.” Encryption protects data that travels to somebody else's computer. Your file does not travel, so there is nothing to encrypt and nothing to intercept — which is a stronger guarantee than encryption, not a weaker one. The page itself is served over HTTPS like the rest of the site.

This makes the tools safe for material you are contractually barred from uploading to third-party services — client footage under NDA, unreleased campaign assets, anything covered by a confidentiality clause.

    How it works

    1. 1. Paste your text

Type or paste a caption, post, title or bio. Counts update on every keystroke, in your browser. Your draft is kept in this browser only, so a refresh does not lose it.

    2. 2. Read each limit

Every platform row shows used, limit and what is left, with a bar that turns amber near the limit and red past it. Limits a platform does not publish are marked not official.

    3. 3. Tidy hashtags and line breaks

Remove repeated hashtags in one click, copy the unique set, and see if you are over Instagram's 5 hashtags. For Instagram, copy a version whose blank lines hold an invisible character so paragraphs stay apart.

    4. 4. Check the first lines

The preview shows roughly what appears before "... more" on Instagram, LinkedIn and TikTok, so the hook lands before the cut.

    Questions

What are the character limits on each platform?

From each platform's own docs, checked September 2026: X 280 (25,000 with Premium), Threads 500, Bluesky 300, Instagram caption 2,200 and bio 150, LinkedIn post 3,000, YouTube title 100 and description 5,000, Pinterest title 100 and description 800. TikTok's caption limit (widely reported as 4,000), the LinkedIn headline (220) and a Facebook post (63,206) are not published officially, so they are marked as such.

Why does X count my post differently from the others?

X uses weighted counting from its open-source twitter-text library: characters in Latin, Greek, Cyrillic and similar scripts count 1, most other characters (including Chinese, Japanese and Korean) count 2, every emoji counts 2 however many code points it is built from, and every link counts 23 however long it is. This tool follows those rules. Links written without http, such as a bare domain, are recognised for common endings; an unusual ending may be counted as text here but as a link on X.

How do emoji count on Instagram, TikTok and LinkedIn?

None of them publish it. This tool checks those platforms against UTF-16 units, how a browser text box counts, where a simple emoji is 2 and a family or flag can be 4 to 11. That is the strictest common method, so if a caption fits here it will fit there. The characters figure at the top counts emoji as 1, the way a reader sees them.

How many hashtags can I use on Instagram?

Instagram's help centre now says up to 5 hashtags per post (it used to be 30, which Meta's API reference still shows). The counter warns when you have more than 5 unique tags, and the duplicate remover drops repeats, matching #Travel and #travel as the same tag and keeping the first.

How do I keep line breaks in an Instagram caption?

Instagram can merge the blank lines between paragraphs, and a space at the end of a line can make a break disappear. The helper strips those trailing spaces and puts one invisible character, U+2800 Braille Pattern Blank, on each blank line, so the line is no longer empty and survives. Instagram does not document this, so test it in a draft; the dot option is kinder to screen readers.

Where does the "... more" cut fall?

No platform publishes the cut for normal posts; it depends on screen width and line breaks. The preview uses the closest official figures, Meta's 125 character recommendation for Instagram ad text and LinkedIn's 150 characters to avoid truncation, combined with the first two or three lines, and TikTok's is line-based only. Treat all three as approximate and put the hook in the first line.
