The file is full-frame. The player then paints its own interface on top: a username and follow control, a caption field, a column of like and share buttons, sometimes a shop tab, and — on YouTube Shorts since May 2026 — an AI overlay label. Nothing is cropped. Something is covered. Safe area is the region you still own. Overlay chrome is the covering. They are one collision named from two sides.
The overlay label is one chip in that chrome, not the whole family. Two-line limit is the captioning habit that keeps a cue from becoming a block that walks into the bottom strip and the button rail. Safe-title is the older broadcast inner rectangle for TV overscan, and it will not save you here. A percentage copied from a six-month-old TikTok template is a snapshot. The region moves with caption length, localised usernames, shop tabs, and OS version.
You do not get to style the chrome, and you do not get to turn it off because it spoils the grade. Preview the current UI before you lock type. Keep the hook line and the face out of the bottom fifth and the button rail. After a reframe, re-place. 16:9 captions that were fine in the middle of a widescreen player sit in the thumb zone once you go 9:16.
In practice
- Check the current player UI, not a remembered safe-zone PNG, before you lock captions.
- Keep essential type out of the bottom strip and the side button rail.
- Treat the Shorts AI chip as extra chrome. Do not burn your own badge in the same corner.
The mistake to avoid
Moving the hook line into the bottom third to 'clear' a like column. You parked it under the caption strip instead.

Safe Zones: Where On-Screen Text Survives Platform UI
Safe-zone percentages in a blog post go stale the moment a platform redesigns its UI. Get the current template from the platform, then verify the export.
Where you will run into it
- Add Captions to a Video — Speech in, styled subtitles out — no manual timing.
- Add a Text Overlay to a Video — Your words, placed exactly where you want them.

Safe area
A safe area is the part of a vertical frame a platform's own interface will not cover — profile name, caption line, like and share buttons all sit outside it — and text or a face placed inside it is routinely hidden from the viewer entirely.
Overlay label
An overlay label is an AI disclosure drawn on the video — YouTube Shorts' May 2026 placement — not a line under the player or in the description.
Two-line limit
The two-line limit is the captioning habit of keeping a cue to two rows so type stays readable and clear of platform chrome on a vertical frame.
Hook rate
Hook rate meaning: the share of people shown a video who are still watching a few seconds in. It grades the opening, not the body.
Retention curve
Retention curve meaning: how many starters are still watching at each second. Watch time is the area under that curve.
