The file plays before, during, or after another video. At five seconds a skip control appears. A billable TrueView view, on skippable in-stream, is 30 seconds, completion if the ad is shorter, or an interaction such as a CTA or companion click (support.google.com/google-ads/answer/2382888). Skippers are usually free. Non-skippable in-stream and bumpers are a different buy: CPM, no skip, a hard length cap. Do not mix the briefs.
Google has largely retired TrueView as a format name in the ads UI in favour of 'skippable in-stream.' The metric column is still TrueView views (relabelled October 2025; counting unchanged). Demand gen is not this placement. Demand gen is the campaign type that can also serve Shorts, in-feed, Discover, and Gmail. A skippable in-stream master is 16:9 more often than 9:16. A Shorts cut inside Demand Gen is the opposite. Watch time on the organic side is a different pile from a paid 30-second view.
The first five seconds are the whole audition, with sound often on in a watch session and still not guaranteed. Burned-in captions still help. A greeting that pays off after the skip point is a skip. Cold-open the claim, then talk. If the campaign also serves Shorts, that is a second file, not a letterbox.
In practice
- Put the reason to stay in the first five seconds. After the skip control, you are paying for attention you already lost.
- Do not deliver a 9:16 mute-autoplay cut as the only asset to a skippable in-stream line.
- Read TrueView views as the paid qualified-view column, not as organic watch time.
The mistake to avoid
Briefing TrueView and uploading a Reels file. Skippable in-stream is a landscape player with a skip button, not a For You swipe.
