    Visible watermark meaning

Also called On-picture watermark, Logo watermark, Visible mark.

A visible watermark is a logo or wordmark drawn on the picture — optional chrome a crop can remove, unlike an invisible provenance mark.

Watermark, on this site, is the family: a mark that says where a file came from. The visible half is the corner logo, the word 'AI', the generator's type. A generation toggle, where a model exposes one, almost always governs this half. Cropping the corner removes it and wrecks the frame. That is the whole design: a person can see it, a person can hide it.

Invisible provenance is the other half. SynthID sits in the pixels or the samples and is built to survive a re-encode. Content credentials (C2PA) are a signed hash of one exact copy and die the moment those bytes change. A visible mark does neither job. It is not machine-readable, it does not survive a crop, and it is not a legal disclosure — a logo in the corner is not Article 50's perceivable label, and it is not Instagram's AI-generated profile badge.

Platform stamps are a third object. Downloading a Reel or a TikTok usually burns that app's mark onto the file. Re-uploading the stamped export is one of the loudest unoriginality signals. Export from the source. If you need a viewer-facing line, write it as type in the safe area, not as a generator bug you hope a crop will keep.

    In practice

    • Treat a watermark toggle as the visible corner mark. It will not embed SynthID or attach a C2PA manifest.
    • Do not crop a corner to 'remove AI.' Invisible marks and manifests are not in that corner.
    • Never re-upload a file that already carries another platform's stamp.

    The mistake to avoid

Calling any AI badge a watermark. A platform overlay, a C2PA tick, and a logo in the frame are three different objects.
