Fable 5.1 vs GPT-6 Astra
Pick Claude Fable 5.1 for coding agents; GPT-6 Astra for computer use. Mythos 5.1 is trusted cyber and life-sci access only.
Pick Claude Fable 5.1 for coding agents. Pick GPT-6 Astra when the job is computer use on OpenAI hosts. Mythos 5.1 is trusted cyber and life-sciences access only. Anthropic made Claude Fable 5.1 generally available on 1 September 2026 (claude-fable-5-1). OpenAI’s GPT-6 Astra (gpt-6-astra) landed around 3-4 September 2026 for agentic coding and computer use, with a Critical cybersecurity threshold and Trusted Access / Daybreak paths for defenders. This is a routing post: which brain for which job, without pretending either one renders your video.

What Anthropic shipped on 1 September
Claude Fable 5.1 is the GA API and product model id claude-fable-5-1. Anthropic positions it for coding, knowledge work, and long-horizon agents.
Mythos 5.1 is the same underlying model with more permissive safeguards. It is not a public “pick Mythos in the dropdown” option for every team. Access is trusted / vetted only, aimed at cybersecurity and life sciences work inside US organizations that Anthropic has approved. If you are not in that program, you do not route to Mythos. You route to Fable.
Sticker pricing Anthropic lists for Fable 5.1 in the launch materials:
| Meter | Rate |
|---|---|
| Input | $10 per million tokens |
| Output | $50 per million tokens |
| Cache reads | 75% cheaper than the prior cache-read sticker ($0.25 per million) |
Keep those as Anthropic’s published stickers. Confirm live rates on Anthropic’s pricing page before you lock a budget sheet.
What OpenAI shipped around 3-4 September
GPT-6 Astra (gpt-6-astra) is OpenAI’s agentic coding and computer-use model from the early September 2026 launch window.

OpenAI’s materials and press coverage describe:
- Strong computer use and software-engineering focus
- A Critical cybersecurity capability threshold, with gating
- Trusted Access / Daybreak paths aimed at defenders, not a free-for-all
- Rollout across Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise (Enterprise often off by default until an admin enables it)
- API availability in the same launch window
OpenAI lists API pricing in the same ballpark as other frontier agent models in this wave; treat “about $10 / $50 per million tokens” as the reported sticker shape and verify on OpenAI’s current pricing page before you quote a client. This post will not invent a private discount.
For plan timing and computer-use limits on a content desk, see Astra rollout: Plus, Pro, API and Astra computer use for content ops. Astra still does not generate your video clips; Astra will not make your videos is the blunt version of that rule.
Routing card: Fable vs Astra vs Mythos
Write the decision as three rows, not a vibes contest.
| Job | Default brain | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Coding agents, knowledge work, long-horizon tool loops on Claude hosts | Fable 5.1 | GA, public id claude-fable-5-1, clear $10/$50 sticker, cache reads called out as cheaper |
| Agentic coding + desktop / computer use on OpenAI hosts (ChatGPT desktop, Codex, API) | GPT-6 Astra | Launch positioning is computer use and SWE; plan rollout is Plus/Pro/Business/Enterprise |
| Vetted US cyber or life-sciences work with Anthropic’s more permissive safeguards | Mythos 5.1 | Same model family as Fable, trusted access only. You do not self-serve Mythos for a marketing repo |
| “Which model draws the Reel?” | Neither | Pick a published video or image row. The brain that drives the terminal is not the renderer |
What I’d actually do
- Stay on the host you already trust. A Claude Code shop on Fable should not flip to Astra because a blog said “Critical.” An OpenAI / Codex shop should not abandon Astra for Fable because Anthropic shipped a day earlier.
- You do not pick Mythos unless you are vetted. If sales or a random Slack admin asks for Mythos, the answer is Fable (or Astra on the OpenAI side), not a forged Mythos id.
- Cyber gating is a feature, not a flex. Astra’s Critical threshold and Daybreak / Trusted Access exist so advanced offensive capability is limited. Defenders get a path; your UGC calendar does not need that path.
- Price is similar at sticker. Fable’s $10/$50 and OpenAI’s reported ~$10/$50 shape mean routing should follow job and host policy, not a fake 2x savings claim.
- Separate brain from renderer. MCP and CLI wiring still call a catalog slug for generates. See Astra and MCP agents and Astra vs Fable vs Sol for agents.
How this sits next to Versely
Versely meters published image and video rows. Fable, Mythos, and Astra are upstream agent brains. Until a catalog row exists for a specific id, do not invent one in a brief.
Useful week-of-9-September discipline:
- Name the agent host (Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, ChatGPT desktop).
- Name the brain allowed on that host (Fable 5.1 or Astra; Mythos only if vetted).
- Name the renderer from the catalog when pixels are required. Open Model Finder or browse /models instead of guessing a slug.
- Keep cyber-gated features off marketing laptops that do not need them.
If you need stills while the agent writes the brief, keep using published OpenAI stills rows such as GPT Image 2 text-to-image, or the Images 2.5 routing notes in GPT-Image-2.5 Flare vs Sunburst and GPT-Image-2.5 Creator Workflow.
FAQ
Is Mythos 5.1 a different model from Fable 5.1?
Anthropic describes Mythos 5.1 as the same model with more permissive safeguards and trusted access only. Treat it as an access policy, not a separate public SKU you casually select.
Did Astra ship before Fable 5.1?
No. Fable 5.1 GA is dated 1 September 2026. Astra’s public launch window is about 3-4 September 2026. Order does not decide your router; job and host policy do.
Should a content team enable every Astra cyber feature?
No. Most content desks need computer use for docs, sheets, and scripts. Critical cyber capability and defender Trusted Access are for security programs, not for caption calendars.
Does either model replace Seedance, Veo, or Kling?
No. Agent brains propose and operate. Renderers spend credits. Keep those columns separate on the routing card.
