Resize for TikTok after a Reels master

TikTok chrome is not Reels chrome. Recrop and recaption the 9:16 master for TikTok's username stack and right rail.

TikTok chrome is not Reels chrome. Both players are 9:16. The buttons, the username stack, the caption field, and the shop tab are not. Resize a video for TikTok is the job after a Reels master you already like: recrop if a face or a burn sits in TikTok’s furniture, recaption if the Reels burn was placed for Instagram’s audio row. Do not upload the Reels MP4 and hope TikTok’s UI misses your type.

This is a chrome pass on a vertical file. It is not 16:9 → 9:16, and it is not “pick the format before you generate.”

    Same 9:16, different chrome

Reels, TikTok, and Shorts all want a tall file. That is why teams ship one 1080×1920 master. The mistake is treating safe area as one rectangle.

Typical collisions when a Reels master lands on TikTok:

    • Reels username-and-audio row is not TikTok’s caption field. A burn that cleared Instagram’s bottom band can sit under TikTok’s username, or ride into the expanding post-text block.
    • TikTok’s right rail (like, comment, share, sometimes shop) is taller or differently spaced than Reels’. A price badge in the lower-right that survived Reels gets covered.
    • TikTok’s composer caption grows with the post text you type in the app. A burn that was legal on a quiet Reels post becomes illegal under a long TikTok caption.
    • YouTube Shorts adds a photoreal AI overlay on the video (YouTube Blog, 27 May 2026). That is a third chrome map. This page is Reels → TikTok. Do not use a Shorts-safe burn as proof the file is TikTok-safe.

Safe Area Preview paints typical TikTok, Reels, Shorts, and YouTube regions in the browser. It is not a vendor template. Apps move. Use it to see whether a face or a caption block sits in the red on TikTok’s overlay, not only Reels’.

    Procedure:

    1. Open the Reels master. Confirm it is 9:16, not 4:5. 4:5 is a feed portrait. TikTok will pillarbox or crop it for you.
    2. Preview against current TikTok chrome. Note every overlap: forehead, pack, burn, CTA.
    3. If the picture is in the chrome (face, SKU), recrop. Do not shrink captions to reveal a covered forehead.
    4. If only type is in the chrome, recaption or move overlays. Do not recrop a good pack to save a burn you can redo.

Length is a second TikTok job. Reels masters often run 15–30 seconds. TikTok still rewards a first second that reads muted. Trimming to a tighter hook is cut_video or the same edit_video call that reframes. Describe both if you need both. Do not “resize” a 90-second Reel and call it a TikTok because the frame is tall.

Recrop if the Reels safe-area is wrong for TikTok

edit_video can punch a tighter 9:16 from a 9:16 file: scale up on the subject, lose a slice of the old edges. That is how you lift a face out of TikTok’s bottom stack without regenerating.

Tell the agent what to protect: eyes, label letters, the pour. A centre punch that was composed for Reels’ slightly different bottom band may still clip an ear once you scale. preview:true is a free 480p check, per-user cooldown. Watch it with a TikTok chrome mock, not a blank phone.

Do not stretch. 9:16 to 9:16 does not need a stretch. If someone exported the Reel as 1080×1350 (4:5) or 1080×1080, this is now a real reframe to 9:16: you must pad (wasted top/bottom) or crop (lost sides of a square, or lost top/bottom of 4:5). Say which. Change video aspect ratio is the general door; this page assumes you already had a Reels-shaped file.

If the Reels master was a 16:9 YouTube cut that someone already punched for Instagram, check whether that punch kept the SKU. A second punch for TikTok will not restore hands the first punch threw away. If the subject is gone, regenerate at 9:16 with TikTok as the named destination, still in the upper third, pack in the middle.

I2V parents: if you will reshoot rather than recrop, crop the still to 9:16 before the next image-to-video. A Reels-safe still that was 4:5 will still be 4:5 in I2V.

Recaption for TikTok, do not reuse the Reels burn

Burned-in captions are pixels. They do not know they moved apps.

If the Reels file already has karaoke in the bottom third:

    • Recropping will move or clip those pixels.
    • Uploading as-is will put them under TikTok chrome even without a crop.

Either way you recaption the TikTok child.

    Sequence:

    1. If you recrop, do it on an uncaptioned parent if you still have one. If the only file is burned, you will recaption after the punch anyway; keep the parent.
    2. Audio stays unless TikTok needs a different VO. Do not translate in this pass unless the market changed.
    3. Add captions to a video on the TikTok file: 165 language codes, 21 BASIC at 1×, 9 DYNAMIC at 2×. Preview on this background, not last week’s Reel.
    4. Place mid-lower, off the right rail, above the username stack. Watch muted in a TikTok preview.
    5. Move authored CTAs the same way. A “link in bio” that sat on Reels’ audio row is now in the like column.

Caption Studio has 45 CSS presets (9 groups × 5 variants). DYNAMIC bills at 2×. A Reels campaign that standardized on glass should not silently switch to a BASIC cousin on TikTok because someone retyped “white captions.” If you have a brand kit, this is when it earns its keep — same look, new placement.

Captions on a month of clips is why you keep an uncaptioned 9:16 master and burn per destination, rather than recaptioning a burned Reel every time chrome shifts.

TikTok AI labels and the Creativity Program are a different page. This page is furniture. A disclosure chip is more chrome. Leave room if you must show one.

Length and hook still have to work

Resize will not invent a first-second claim. If the Reels master opens on a logo hold that Instagram’s audience tolerated, TikTok will swipe. Cut the hold. Keep-range from the first readable frame.

Checkable TikTok tests after the resize:

    1. Mute, frame one. Claim or mess or pack. Not a title card that Reels used as a brand pause.
    2. Face and SKU clear of the right rail and the bottom stack.
    3. Caption line one readable in the first second.
    4. Duration matches the beat you meant to ship, not the Reel’s full runtime out of laziness.
    5. Loop: last frame is not a Reels end-card that names Instagram.

The tool does not post to TikTok. Export the MP4. Publish through your posting flow. Resize is format, not distribution.

If the Reel was performing and the only change is chrome, do not regenerate the picture. Recrop and recaption. Regenerating “for TikTok energy” is how you lose the SKU you already signed.

Resize the Reels master in Versely against TikTok chrome, then recaption the child. Same tall file is not the same safe area.

    FAQ

The file is already 9:16. Why resize?

Because TikTok’s UI is not Reels’ UI. You may only recaption. You may also need a tighter punch so a face clears a different stack. The door is the same tool.

    Will it add captions automatically?

No. Reframe and caption are separate. Pair with add-captions-to-video after the TikTok frame is right.

Can I keep the Reels burn and upload anyway?

You can. The burn will sit where Instagram needed it. On TikTok that is often the username or the rail. Recaption is cheaper than a week of covered hooks.
