The Midjourney look is a brand decision, not a default

A recognizable MJ aesthetic is furniture. If the brand is photoreal UGC, it is the wrong furniture.

Midjourney has a look. You can spot it in a feed without the watermark: the painterly light, the tasteful grain, the slightly mythic product, the face that is beautiful in a way no UGC camera is. That look is furniture. Furniture you pick once. It is not a default, and it is not "the good image model." If the brand is photoreal UGC, Midjourney is the wrong sofa in the room. The product-versus-product pick is Versely vs Midjourney.

Midjourney V8.2 is default now is the version post — what changed since V7, what is still silent on video, what Versely actually runs (V7 for stills and V7 image-to-video). Caption styles that fit your brand is the same decision on type. This post is the lock: treat the Midjourney look the way you treat a caption family. Choose it on purpose, or choose against it on purpose. Do not land on it because it was the first model in the dropdown.

    Furniture, not quality

A caption family is recognizable before the logo is. A stills engine can be the same. After three posts, a returning viewer should be able to say "that's them" from the light and the grade, not from a wordmark.

Midjourney's look is unusually sticky. That is the feature and the bug.

Feature: if the brand wants that register — editorial illustration, fashion-adjacent key art, a mythic product world, campaign stills that are allowed to look authored — you get a house style without inventing one. Lock V7 (on Versely) or whatever version you actually generate on, lock a style-reference or a personalization profile if you use one, lock aspect and grade. Stop shopping.

Bug: if the brand wants to look like a person filmed it — bathroom mirror, kitchen demo, street UGC, "I just found this" — Midjourney reads as an ad wearing a costume. The feed already knows that costume. You will get compliments in the comments and no trust. Photoreal UGC is a different furniture set: messier light, plainer faces, a camera that could have been a phone.

Quality is not the question. Midjourney stills can be excellent and still be wrong, the way a loud entertainment caption can be perfectly set and still be wrong on a wealth manager.

    The decision rule

Answer one question about the account, not about the still.

Should a stranger recognise us from the image model?

If yes, and the recognition you want is authored, cinematic, slightly unreal — Midjourney is a candidate. Lock it. Put the lock next to the caption family: same meeting, same doc. "We look like this." Version-hopping every time V8.x ships is recasting the photographer. The V8.2 default post is when to evaluate a bump, not a reason to restyle the brand from an alpha.

If yes, and the recognition you want is "this could have been shot" — do not use Midjourney as the house engine. Use a workhorse or a UGC-adjacent photoreal model for the stills that become posts. You can still use Midjourney for internal concepting. You cannot ship the concepting look and keep the UGC story.

If no — the still is a board, a reference, a throwaway — Midjourney is an expensive default. Ten credits a generate on V7 is a hero-adjacent price. Volume boards belong on a workhorse. Midjourney on a twelve-up contact sheet is how you get twelve mythic frames and no SKU.

A table you can actually use:

Account already is Stills engine Midjourney?
Photoreal UGC, talking-head, product-in-hand Phone-like photoreal / workhorse Concepting only
Fashion, music, editorial, "campaign film" stills Midjourney, locked Yes, as furniture
Dense type, infographic, quote cards Type / layout model No
SaaS UI, documentary, founder-real Clean commercial, low variance Rarely
Illustration system, painterly brand Midjourney or a dedicated illustrator Yes, if that is the system

The caption analogue is exact. Loud pop captions belong to entertainment brands. Midjourney's look belongs to brands that want to look authored. Mixing either into a UGC account is not "raising production value." It is a costume change.

Lock it the way you lock captions

If you said yes to Midjourney:

    1. Pick the version you will actually run. On Versely that is V7 until a V8 endpoint exists. Do not prompt as if you were on V8.2's personalization pass when you are not.
    2. Save a standing clause. Palette, medium, lens, what you refuse (no extra lettering, no mythic fog if you are selling soap). Same clause on every generate.
    3. Style-reference the keeper, not the mood. One approved still as the furniture sample. New stills have to sit next to it.
    4. Stop. New models, new versions, new "this one is sharper" posts are recasts. Evaluate at a season boundary, like a host change.

If you said no: keep Midjourney off the social pipeline — a single MJ frame in a UGC grid is louder than you think — and relight any MJ concept on the house engine before it ships. The engine is part of the brand kit, or it is not in the kit.

    FAQ

Is the Midjourney look "dated" now that every feed has it?

It is common. Common is not the same as dated, and it is not the same as wrong. It is a reason not to use it as a default. If your brand's furniture is that look, lean in and lock it so you at least look like one account. If your brand's furniture is real-camera UGC, the commonness is why you should stay off it — you will look like every other AI campaign, not like a person.

Versely runs V7. Does the look argument change when V8.2 is the public default?

No. V8.2 is an aesthetics and personalization pass on the V8 line; the family still reads as Midjourney. The version post covers speed, 2K, text, and silent video. None of that decides whether your brand should look like Midjourney. Decide the furniture, then pick the version you have.

Can we use Midjourney for ads and a workhorse for organic?

Only if you are willing to look like two brands. Ads that are mythic and organic that is bathroom-mirror UGC is a split some companies can carry (campaign vs always-on). Most cannot. If the same account posts both, pick one stills register. Paid vs organic is a budget line, not a look line.

What if the client asks for "that Midjourney look" and the brand is UGC?

Show them the costume problem with their own product in both registers. If they still want MJ, they are choosing authored furniture. Lock it, and stop mixing in phone-UGC stills that fight it. What you should not do is split the difference every week. That is how you get no furniture at all.
