    Vestibular-safe alternatives to whip pans

    Replace whip pans and crash zooms with locked-off or eased moves, ship a reduced-motion cut, and keep the original only when a warning is the honest choice.

    A generated whip pan does two jobs at once, and only one of them is creative. It sells energy on a feed that rewards motion. It also slams the entire visual field sideways in a few frames, which is exactly the kind of non-essential camera motion WCAG 2.2's Understanding document for Success Criterion 2.3.3 flags as a vestibular trigger: dizziness, nausea, migraine, and in the worst cases a need to stop and recover. Crash zooms do the same trick on the depth axis. If you prompted the move because it looked like "premium," you now have a clip that a slice of the audience cannot watch.

    This is not an argument against camera movement. It is an argument against treating high-velocity camera motion as the default, then discovering at delivery that you have no quieter cut. The work is deciding, per shot, whether the move is doing narrative work or just filling a motion prior. If it is the second, replace it. If it is the first, keep it and warn.

    What actually nauseates, and what does not

    Vestibular trouble is not "any motion." People with inner-ear disorders react to large-field, unexpected reorientation: the frame itself accelerating, rotating, or expanding while the viewer sits still. A subject walking through a locked-off frame is usually fine. A lens that yanks the world 90 degrees in eight frames is not.

    The table is a production heuristic, not a medical ranking. If a shot would be unpleasant as a first-person roller coaster, it is a candidate for replacement. If the camera could be a security cam and the shot would still read, lock it off.

    A related failure: models add drift even when you never asked for a move. That is a different problem, solved by stating stillness as a property of the camera.     Prompt the quiet version first

    If you generate the whip pan first, you will fall in love with the energy and never budget the alternative. Flip the order. Generate the usable cut, then decide whether a high-velocity beat is worth a second render.

    For a locked-off master, put camera language first, name the mount, and give the subject the motion:

    For an eased pan that still changes geography without a smear:

    Slow pan left, ease in and ease out, the camera never accelerates. The storefront sign enters from frame right and settles in the center. Tripod head, no handheld shake.

    Name the mechanism if you want a push without a crash. A dolly moves the camera; a zoom changes focal length. Mixing those words is how you get a crash you did not mean to order. The distinction is in dolly in versus zoom in. For vestibular load, a slow dolly with an ease is almost always the better of the two, because the magnification of the whole field does not jump.

    Where a model exposes motion level, treat it as an amount dial on everything, not a camera-versus-subject selector. Low flattens subject motion too. If the person has to walk, leave the dial in the middle and carry stillness in the prose.

    A first-and-last-frame generation is the structural version of the same idea: pin both ends to the same framing and the model has nowhere to whip. That is the first-last-frame path, not a better adjective.

    If you still want the violent version for a trailer beat, do not keep stacking intensity words. Generate that beat as its own short clip, not as the only version of the scene.

    Ship a reduced-motion cut, not a single hero

    One export is the trap. The deliverable is two files that share a script, a grade, and a shot list:

    1. Full cut. The version with the whip, the crash, the orbit. Fine for a sound-on, lean-in context where the viewer chose the video.
    2. Reduced-motion cut. Same coverage, locked-off or eased. This is what autoplays, what a landing page should serve when prefers-reduced-motion: reduce is set, and what you hand a client who asked for an accessible master.

    When the original move is worth a warning

    Do not flatten a shot whose meaning is the motion. A stunt, a ride, a title sequence that is a whip by design: replacing those with a lock lies about the content. Keep the move, and stop pretending it is harmless.

    The warning is a production choice, not a disclaimer pasted over a loop:

    • Do not autoplay it. WCAG 2.2 Success Criterion 2.2.2 Pause, Stop, Hide already requires a pause, stop, or hide control for moving content that starts automatically, lasts more than five seconds, and sits in parallel with other page content. A nauseating hero that autoplays next to a headline fails that on two axes.
    • Say what the clip contains, in text next to the player: rapid camera movement, not "may not be suitable for some viewers." Specific beats vague.
    • Offer the reduced-motion cut as the default and the original as a choice, not the other way around. People who want the whip will click. People who cannot watch it should not have to hunt for the safe file.

    A warning is not a substitute for a second cut when the video is the product page, the ad, or anything a person did not elect to sit through. It is the right tool when the motion is the point and you are not willing to lie about it.

    FAQ

    Does a slow pan still count as a vestibular risk?

    It can, if it is long, unsmoothed, or paired with parallax. A two-second eased pan that settles is a different object from a six-second sweep that never stops. Keep the move short, ease both ends, and generate a locked-off take of the same staging so you have somewhere to go if a reviewer cannot watch even the slow version.

    Is a motion warning enough for an autoplaying hero?

    No. A warning next to a loop that has already started is too late for someone the motion just made sick. Pause-by-default, respect prefers-reduced-motion, and autoplay only the reduced-motion cut. Save the whip for a click-to-play context.

    Can I fix a whip pan in the editor instead of regenerating?

    Sometimes. A slight drift can be cropped back toward still, at the cost of resolution. A true whip is a smear across the whole frame; cropping will not un-smear it. Treat editor stabilization as a rescue for mild drift, and regenerate when the camera move itself is the problem.

    Do I owe a reduced-motion cut on every social clip?

    Not on every clip, and not as a legal reading of WCAG 2.3.3, which is Level AAA and covers animation triggered by interaction. You owe it on anything that autoplays in parallel with other content, and on anything you would be embarrassed to show a colleague who gets migraines from parallax sites. That is a larger set than "the annual brand film," and a smaller set than "every story."
