Focal length words that actually change the frame
24mm, 85mm, macro and anamorphic shift field of view and depth of field, not just mood. Which lens words are load-bearing and which are decoration.
"85mm" is not a mood word. It is a specific instruction that changes how much of the world fits in the frame, how compressed the distance between near and far objects looks, and how much of the shot is in focus. The current generation of video models responds to it — field of view and depth of field both shift on lens language, rather than the phrase acting as a generic prestige signal.
That makes lens words some of the highest-value real estate in a prompt, and also some of the most wasted. A lot of prompts carry a lens number that contradicts the framing described three clauses later, or a camera-body name that does nothing at all. Worth separating the two.
Three things a focal length changes
Field of view. A short focal length sees a wide angle of the world; a long one sees a narrow slice. This is the change people expect and the easiest to verify — did the frame get wider or tighter from the same position?
Perspective and compression. This is the one that actually makes lens language worth writing. At a short focal length, the size difference between something near the camera and something far from it is exaggerated: noses get big, corridors stretch, a room looks larger than it is. At a long focal length, near and far collapse toward the same apparent size: a crowd looks stacked, a distant building looms behind a subject who is standing well in front of it. Perspective is a function of where the camera is, and focal length is what forces you to move it to keep the same framing.
Depth of field. Longer lenses, closer subjects, and wider apertures all push toward a shallower zone of sharpness. A macro lens at close range has a focus plane a few millimetres deep. A 24mm on a landscape has almost everything sharp. Focal length is not the only variable, but in prompt terms it is the one carrying most of the signal.

The high-yield entries are the extremes. 24mm, 85mm, macro, telephoto and anamorphic produce visibly different frames from each other. 35mm versus 50mm is a distinction most models will not hold apart reliably, so if you are writing one of those two, you are mostly buying a "normal-ish lens, no strong signature" outcome either way.
Load-bearing versus decorative
A lens word is load-bearing if it names something that changes the geometry or the focus of the image. It is decorative if it only names equipment.
Load-bearing: focal length numbers with mm, wide-angle, telephoto, macro, fisheye, anamorphic, tilt-shift, shallow depth of field, deep focus. Each of these maps to a visible property of the picture.
Semi-load-bearing: aperture notation like f/1.4 or f/16. It does not control an aperture, because there is no aperture, but it correlates strongly in captions with shallow and deep focus respectively, so it works as a rough depth-of-field cue. Write it alongside shallow depth of field rather than instead of it.
Decorative: camera body names. Shot on RED, Arri Alexa, Blackmagic and similar are brand tokens with no geometric consequence. At best they pull the grade a little; at worst they burn prompt budget that a real framing instruction could have used. The same goes for cinematic lens, professional glass, and beautiful bokeh — none of them specify a number, a distance, or a plane.
Ambiguous, and worth avoiding for that reason: shot on 35mm by itself. In cinematography, 35mm is both a focal length and a film gauge, and those imply opposite things. As a focal length it is a mildly wide lens; as a gauge it is a format signal that mostly reads as grain and halation. If you mean the lens, write 35mm lens. If you mean the film look, write 35mm film grain and put it in the style slot at the end of the prompt, well away from your camera line.
The clause people leave out
Focal length and subject distance are a pair. Change one without the other and the framing changes; change both together and the framing stays the same while the perspective transforms. That is the whole reason a lens choice matters, and it is the part most prompts do not say.
Compare these two lines:

The first leaves the model to guess where the camera is standing. The second pins it, which is what makes the compression legible: an 85mm from two metres gives you the flattened, separated look people actually want when they write "85mm," whereas an 85mm shoved up against the subject is just a tight crop. If you cannot state a distance in metres comfortably, state it in shot terms instead — "shot from across the room," "camera at arm's length," "from the far end of the corridor."
Keep the whole thing in the cinematography slot at the front of the prompt, with shot size and angle. Lens language that arrives after the subject, the action and the lighting is competing with everything already established and tends to get approximated the same way late camera-movement language does, a pattern covered in camera instructions models silently ignore.
Checking whether your model reads lenses at all
Support is uneven, and it is worth ten minutes to find out where your model sits before you build a prompt library on top of an assumption.
- Write one prompt with a fixed subject and location. A person standing in a doorway at the end of a hallway works well, because a hallway makes compression obvious.
- Generate it twice, changing exactly one token:

On a working model, the wide version stretches the hallway into a long receding tunnel and the telephoto version collapses it so the far wall crowds in behind the subject. If both clips show a similar hallway, the lens token is not doing geometric work on that model.

The model catalog lists the capabilities and parameters each video model actually exposes, which is worth reading before you run the test. When the test comes back negative, the fallback is a reference image that already has the perspective you want — constraining by example works on models that will not take the instruction as text.
The wider vocabulary this sits inside, including the shot-size ladder and framing rules, is in shot composition prompts. Lens words are the part of that vocabulary with the clearest physical meaning, which is exactly why they are worth writing precisely rather than sprinkling.
FAQ
Does writing a focal length actually simulate that lens?
No, and it does not need to. Nothing is being rendered through simulated optics. What is happening is that the model has learned strong associations between lens vocabulary and the visual properties of footage captioned with it, so the token pulls the output toward the field of view, compression and focus behaviour typical of that lens. The result looks right without any optics involved.
Why does my 85mm shot not have a blurry background?
Most likely because the camera distance is unstated or implied to be very close, so the model has no reason to produce separation. Add an explicit distance and add shallow depth of field as its own phrase. Focal length nudges depth of field; naming the depth of field directly is what makes it a specification rather than a hint.
Should I use lens words in image prompts too?
Yes, and they behave the same way — field of view, compression and focus all respond. Images are the cheaper place to develop your lens vocabulary, because you can iterate through a set of focal lengths on the same subject quickly before committing the winner to a video generation.
Is anamorphic worth prompting, or is it just a look?
It is both, and that is fine. Anamorphic carries real geometric consequences — the horizontal stretch and oval out-of-focus highlights are structural, not a filter. Two cautions. It belongs with a wide delivery aspect ratio, since the whole look is built around a wide frame and it fights a 9:16 crop. And do not stack it with a conflicting lens instruction: 35mm anamorphic is one coherent specification, while 35mm anamorphic, macro, telephoto compression is three, and the model will pick one.
