GPT Image 2 vs Nano Banana 2

GPT Image 2 is the arena stills pick; Nano Banana 2 is Google’s daily edit still. Choose by job, not brand loyalty.

GPT Image 2 is the arena stills pick. Nano Banana 2 is Google’s daily edit still. Choose by job, not by who won a screenshot. GPT Image 2 Text to Image is OpenAI, text-to-image, 4K listed, 4 credits, discounted: high-fidelity generation with strong prompt adherence. Nano Banana 2 is Google, text-to-image plus image-to-image plus edit-image, 8 credits, discounted: ultra-fast lightweight generation for rapid iteration. GPT Image 2 launched 21 April 2026; Nano Banana 2 on 26 February 2026 (dates from kingy.ai, OrcaRouter and InVideo roundups, read 4 September 2026). Arena #1 on text-to-image is a generate vote. Banana 2’s catalog extra is the edit path. This page is the general stills pick. It is not a type-in-image bake-off.

If the still must contain readable words as the test, that is a different post. Here the test is: which still do you keep when the job is a picture.

    Two cards, two different machines

GPT Image 2 T2I. Content type image. Categories: text-to-image. No duration. 4K max output listed. 4 credits. Requires no image. OpenAI. You describe a scene. You get a still that is supposed to follow the sentence, including named objects and a layout instruction more often than a texture-only engine. Use it when the first still has to be right from a prompt — a reasoned scene, a specific product-in-context, a composition you can spell.

Nano Banana 2. Content type image. Categories: text-to-image, image-to-image, edit-image. 8 credits. Google. The published description is ultra-fast lightweight image generation for rapid creative iteration. The extra categories are the tell: you will change this still in language (“swap the jacket, keep the face”) without starting from a blank prompt. Use it when the still is a loop: generate, edit, edit again, then maybe animate.

Credits are not the quality ranking. 4 versus 8 is a price on different contracts. GPT Image 2 is cheaper per generate on this catalog and lists 4K. Banana 2 is more expensive per call and sells the edit surface. If you generate once and ship, 4 credits on GPT Image 2 is the honest sticker. If you generate once and then spend three edit turns, Banana 2’s 8-credit edit path can beat “new GPT still every turn” in total credits and in identity lock. Count the week, not the first confirm.

Neither card is video. Duration lists are empty. Prompting 5 seconds of motion on either is how you get a still of a camera. After approval, image-to-video. Flux 2 Max is the other photoreal stills cousin at 7 credits, Flux family, T2I only. It is not in this pick except as a third door when you wanted Flux, not OpenAI or Google.

Imagen 4 used to sit on the same Google roster as a photoreal generate. It is shut down. Imagen 4 is shut down. Use Banana 2 is the cutoff. Banana 2 is the live Google still. Flux 2 Max is the photoreal still if that was the brief. Do not collapse “Google stills” into a leftover Imagen card.

Arena #1 is a generate vote

Public 2026 stills writeups put GPT Image 2 at the top of text-to-image and editing arenas after the 21 April launch, with Nano Banana 2 as Google’s February line and Grok Imagine Image 2.0 later climbing the same boards (roundups from kingy.ai, OrcaRouter and InVideo, read 4 September 2026). Those boards are preference votes on stills, often short sessions, often English prompts, often faces and pretty rooms. They are useful the way Omni Flash vs H3 Elo is useful: dated, noisy, not a router.

What an arena does not tell you:

    • Whether the SKU’s label survives a 9:16 crop.
    • Whether identity holds across four jacket swaps.
    • Whether 4K on the card is the 4K you will export.
    • Whether the next step is I2V, and which still I2V prefers.

Use the arena as a prior: GPT Image 2 is a strong from-scratch still. Then run your still. A bottle with a legal line, a face you must keep, a flat-lay, a poster that is actually a layout — those jobs split.

    Pick GPT Image 2 when:

    • You have no reference file. The prompt is the brief.
    • Prompt adherence is the failure mode you fear (wrong object, wrong count, ignored layout).
    • You want the 4K listing at 4 credits for a generate-once hero.
    • You will composite type later in an editor, so type-in-image is not the test.

    Pick Nano Banana 2 when:

    • You already have a still (photo or generate) and the job is a change.
    • Identity must survive a wardrobe or background swap.
    • You will iterate in language five times this hour.
    • You are staying in Google’s stills stack on the way to Omni I2V.

Pick both, once per campaign: same prompt, one GPT Image 2, one Banana 2 generate (not an edit). Keep the file you would print. Then do edits on Banana 2 if the keeper needs a change, even if GPT Image 2 won the generate. Edit path beats loyalty.

Pick neither when the still is a dense multilingual layout or a lettering-as-design object. That is Ideogram / Seedream territory, not this pair. When the still is Flux photoreal on purpose, Max.

The type-only comparison is elsewhere on purpose. If the still’s job is a quoted string in the pixels, run that test. If the still’s job is a picture, stay here.

After the still, the week continues

A stills pick that ignores the next model is half a router.

If frame one must be this file → I2V. Hailuo 2.3 Fast is 6s/10s at 28 credits when cheap. Omni Video is 4–10s at 9 credits when Omni-shaped.

If this person and this bottle must appear in a new room → Veo R2V, 8s, 64 credits. Generate the three stills on GPT Image 2 or Banana 2 until you would print them. Then recast. Do not recast a sketch.

If you needed motion from two endpoints → Veo first-last or Flux 3 first-last, not another stills roll.

Captions happen on the video, not inside GPT Image 2. Add captions to video. Article 50 can apply to a realistic still of a real person; read Article 50.

Open text to image and confirm the slug. gpt-image-2-text-to-image versus nano-banana-2. There is also gpt-image-1-5 and gpt-image-1-edit and nano-banana (the older 4-credit Google still). The pick on this page is 2 versus 2. Do not grab 1.5 because the name is shorter.

What this pick refuses to be

It refuses to be a type-in-image test. Quoted strings, kerning, thumbnail survival of a headline — different page, different failure mode. A creamy bottle that wins an arena vote can still misspell SALE.

It refuses to be a video pick. Neither slug has a duration. Omni Video, Veo, Hailuo, Seedance 2.5 are after.

It refuses to be “Google vs OpenAI” as a brand loyalty exercise. Imagen 4 is also Google and is not Banana 2. GPT Image 1.5 is also OpenAI and is not 2. Confirm the slug.

It refuses to spend motion credits on a still you have not locked. 4 credits or 8 credits is the argument this week. 64 credits of Veo R2V on an unapproved face is a different argument, and you already lost it.

If you want both stills rows on one bill, sign up and run the same prompt once each. Keep the print. Edit on Banana 2. Animate last.

    FAQ

Is GPT Image 2 always the stills winner because of arenas?

It is a strong from-scratch generate, and 2026 arena writeups placed it at the top of T2I after 21 April 2026. Nano Banana 2 is the Google iterate/edit still at 8 credits with I2I and edit-image on the card. Job first. Arena second.

Why is Banana 2 more credits if it is “lightweight”?

Lightweight is the generate pitch. The card also sells image-to-image and edit. You are paying 8 credits for a still you can keep working. GPT Image 2’s 4-credit card is T2I. Different machine.

Should I use this pick to choose a type-in-image model?

No. Readable words in the pixels is a separate test. This page is the general stills pick: prompt-adherent generate versus Google’s daily edit loop.
