Grok Imagine Image vs GPT Image 2

Grok 2.0 is region edit and compositing. GPT Image 2 is instruction-following stills. Pick the lever, not the arena rank.

    Versely Team••8 min read

GPT Image 2 launched 21 April 2026 and sits first on text-to-image and editing arenas in the reporting that names both models. Grok Imagine Image 2.0 arrived 7–8 August 2026, second on both arenas, with region-level editing, multi-image compositing, templates, and Quality Mode as the default inside Grok. Arena rank is a preference score, not a brief. The brief is which lever you need: a region edit that keeps the rest of the frame, or an instruction that rebuilds from a sentence. On Versely the 2.0 stills are Grok Imagine Image 2.0 (text-to-image, 2 credits, discounted from 5) and its edit sibling, Grok Imagine Image 2.0 Edit (5 credits). The older rows are Grok Imagine (2 credits, 4K listed, loosely-styled ideation) and Grok Imagine Image Quality (4 credits, up to 2K). You click GPT Image 2 Text to Image (9 credits at SD/HD, 17 at 4K, strong prompt adherence) when the sentence is the contract. Instruction-based edits of a supplied plate on the OpenAI side are GPT Image 1 Edit (2 credits, 4K, image required) — a different slug, honest about being an edit.

This page is not a three-way with Nano Banana 2. It is Grok’s region lever versus GPT’s instruction lever.

Arena rank is not the brief

#1 versus #2 on stills arenas means people in those arenas preferred GPT Image 2 to Grok 2.0, and preferred 2.0 to most of the field. Use that as a prior when the job is “make me a still I will iterate on.” Do not use it as a reason to abandon a pack shot that already works, and do not use it as a reason to reroll a correct bottle because a blog said GPT is first.

Dates, with sources: GPT Image 2 on 21 April 2026 (InVideo’s GPT Image roundup); Grok Imagine Image 2.0 on 7–8 August 2026, region-level editing, multi-image compositing, templates, Quality Mode default in Grok (kingy.ai; OrcaRouter on Quality Mode). Nano Banana 2 remains Google’s fast stills line from 26 February 2026. It is not this comparison.

Video is a different family on both vendors. Grok Imagine Video is a published clip row. GPT Image 2 is stills. Do not ask either stills card for fifteen seconds. Do not ask a video row to recrop a label.

Grok the chat brain is a third object. Pinning a Grok planner in an agent host does not select Imagine. Name the stills slug when you want pixels.

Region edit keeps the rest of the frame

A reroll samples a new image. A region edit takes pixels you already approved and changes the part you named.

That is the job Grok 2.0 is for. The bottle is right; the condensation is wrong. The room is right; the exit sign has to go. The face is right; the necklace is last season. Regenerating the whole frame to fix those notes is how you lose the bottle, the room, and the face.

Write the instruction like an art director:

    • Name the region. “The label on the carton,” “the sky through the window,” “the necklace only.”
    • Name the change. Replace, remove, recolour, relight that region.
    • Name the freeze. “Everything else unchanged” is the contract.

If you cannot point at the region, you do not have a region edit. You have a new generate. New generates on the Grok side belong on the 2-credit Imagine card when you want unexpected takes, or the 4-credit Quality card when the still is the one you will edit. The edit itself is Grok Imagine Image 2.0 Edit at 5 credits. Quality Mode is a Grok-app default in the August write-ups. Inside a studio catalog, defaults do not travel. You pick a slug.

Multi-image compositing is the other 2.0 job: several files in, one frame out. A signed pack shot, a signed hand, a signed room — composite them instead of asking a single prompt to invent a hand that has never held this pack in this kitchen. Three good files beat twelve muddy ones. This is not Seedance’s twelve-reference video stack. It is a stills composite.

Templates in that reporting are starting points — a layout, a genre — not a brand kit. A template will not remember your hex.

Limits are real. Fine type, tiny logos, and six notes in one turn will smear. One region, one change, then look. If the region is the entire frame, you are generating.

Region edit is also how you stop paying video prices for stills problems. A label on a pack is a stills note. Fix it here, then animate.

Instruction following rebuilds from a sentence

GPT Image 2’s catalog pitch is high-fidelity generation with strong prompt adherence, up to 4K, 9 credits at SD/HD (17 at 4K), discounted, text-to-image only. requires_image is false. You describe the still. It follows the description more often than a loosely-styled ideation model. That is the lever: a long, specific sentence that names the object, the composition, the type in the scene.

    Use GPT Image 2 when:

    • The still does not exist yet and the brief is a paragraph you actually wrote.
    • The object is named and has to be that object, not a cousin with similar vibes.
    • You need a listed 4K ceiling on the generate.
    • In-image type is short and quoted, and you will still proof it at 100 percent.

Do not use it as a region edit. The published GPT Image 2 card is text-to-image. Changing one locked still in plain English on the OpenAI side is GPT Image 1 Edit: instruction-based, preserves the rest of the frame, 2 credits, 4K, image required. GPT Image 1.5 sits in the middle of that family: text-to-image, image-to-image, and edits, 2 credits, 4K, long instructions, legible in-image text. Name the slug. “GPT Image” in Slack is three cards.

Grok Imagine’s 2-credit card is the opposite temperament: fast, loosely-styled, unexpected takes, 4K listed. Use it when you want a weird first take and you expect to throw most of them away. Do not run a ten-image ideation grid on GPT Image 2 “because it is #1.” That is how you spend adherence credits on sketches. Do not run a client hero on the 2-credit Grok card “because 2.0 is #2.” That is how you ship a loose take.

Prompt adherence is not a brand kit. GPT Image 2 does not remember your hex either. Quote the label. Attach a reference if the SKU must match — on the rows that accept one — or composite.

    Which slug you actually click

    Job Click Why
Change this part, keep the rest Grok Imagine Image 2.0 Edit, 5 credits Region lever
Combine these files into one frame Grok Imagine Image 2.0 Edit, up to three images Multi-image stills
Weird first takes, throw most away Grok Imagine, 2 credits Ideation
New still from a long, specific sentence GPT Image 2, 9 credits (17 at 4K) Instruction / adherence
Plain-English change on a supplied OpenAI plate GPT Image 1 Edit, 2 credits Instruction edit
Lettering as a poster Ideogram V4, not this bake-off Different specialist

Versely prices these rows in credits: 2, 4, 5, or 9 a call. xAI and OpenAI publish their own consumer prices, which are not Versely rates.

The text-to-image tool is the generate door. The AI photo editor is the edit door. Grok Imagine 2.0 region editing is the 2.0 capability page. This page is only the fork versus GPT Image 2.

Article 50 still applies to a composite that resembles a real person and is published as authentic-looking media in the EU. Mixing files is not an exemption. Article 50 disclosure is the copy.

If you can point at the region, use Grok’s lever. If you can write the sentence and there is no plate, use GPT Image 2. Sign up and click the slug that matches the lever, not the arena headline.

    FAQ

Is there a Versely slug named Grok Imagine Image 2.0?

Yes. Grok Imagine Image 2.0 is the 2.0 text-to-image row (2 credits, discounted from 5), and Grok Imagine Image 2.0 Edit (5 credits) is its edit sibling. The older stills cards are Grok Imagine (2 credits, 4K listed) and Grok Imagine Image Quality (4 credits, up to 2K). Region edit and compositing, the August 2026 headline features, map to the Edit row.

Can GPT Image 2 do a region edit on this catalog card?

The published GPT Image 2 row is text-to-image. For a plain-English change to a supplied plate, use GPT Image 1 Edit. Do not reroll GPT Image 2 to move a necklace and call it a region edit.

    Who wins on in-image type?

Neither is Ideogram. GPT Image 2’s adherence helps a quoted string inside a reasoned scene. Grok 2.0’s region edit helps when the type is already right and something else is wrong. Proof at 100 percent on both. For a poster whose job is the word, start on a lettering specialist.
