Instagram original-content rules are not an AI ban
Instagram's original-content guidelines punish accounts that primarily ship unoriginal reels — borders, watermarks, speed changes, bare credits. Using a generate is allowed; a templated farm is what recommendations drop.

Instagram's original content guidelines are a distribution rule: whether a Reel, photo, or carousel can be shown to people who do not already follow you. They are not a list of banned generators. They do not name Seedance, Kling, or Veo. They name unoriginal work — files you did not create, or did not materially edit, shipped at farm volume.
The April 2026 update on rewarding original creators extended that Reels rule to photos and carousels. The test did not become “was this made with AI.” It stayed “is this yours, or a low-effort copy of someone else's.”
What the guidelines actually punish
Original, in Instagram's words, is work you wholly created or that reflects your unique perspective — a photo you took, a video you filmed, a graphic you designed, or a third-party clip you materially edited. Material is the word doing the work. The guidelines' own examples of edits that do not count:
- borders
- watermarks
- speed changes
- just crediting the original creator
The self-check they publish is blunt: if someone could remove your contribution and the post would be virtually the same, it needs more of you in it. A screenshot of another account's Reel with @credit in the caption fails that check. A speed-ramped recut with a white frame fails it. A TikTok watermark left on an upload fails it.
Enforcement is account-shaped. If Instagram believes your account primarily posts unoriginal Reels, photos, or carousels, the account can drop out of recommendations to new audiences. Followers still see you. Help Centre copy on original content says you become eligible again when most of your recent Reels, photos, and carousels are original across a rolling 30-day window. Account Status is the standing. Appeals exist. Deleting the farm is the repair, not a metadata strip. Copyright takedowns are a different document. Originality here is recommendation eligibility.
A generate you directed is original
A file you generated is work you produced. You wrote the brief. You picked the shot. You rejected the miss. You exported the cut. Instagram's originality test is authorship and transformation, not whether a diffusion model sat in the pipeline.
That is why this page is not “how to hide AI.” The AI Info label, C2PA, and self-disclosure are a different column — the AI label is not a reach penalty. A labelled generate you directed can still be original. An unlabelled repost with the watermark cropped is still unoriginal.
Generation makes a templated farm cheap. Forty near-identical hooks with a new caption, a border, and a speed ramp is the shape the guidelines catch — camera, stock, or model. The generator is not the violation. The farm is.
If the Reel exists because you specified a product you have rights to, a motion you directed, and a line only your account would write, you are on the original side of the line. If the Reel exists because a trending file was easy to re-upload, you are not.
The farm recommendations actually drop
A templated farm is an account whose last thirty days would collapse if you stripped the borrowed clip, the watermark, and the caption credit. Typical tells:
- The same six-frame slideshow, new SKU in the overlay, identical timing.
- A viral Reel downloaded, speed-changed, re-uploaded with “via @other.”
- Compilations of other people's clips with no commentary that would survive without them.
- Tool watermarks left on because stripping felt like extra work — or added as if a logo were a material edit.
- Captions that describe the footage (“watch this crazy trick”) instead of adding a point of view.
Instagram already lists those low-effort edits. The April 2026 expansion closed photos and carousels as an aggregator loophole. Native repost and Stories shares are how you curate without claiming the file.
Monetization is a sibling rule. Instagram's unoriginal-content demonetization path covers who can earn. This page is only recommendations. Diagnose the document you are actually under.
How to ship original Reels from a generate
Treat the generate as production, not as a copier.
- Direct a shot you would own on a camera. Subject, action, camera, duration the catalog actually sells. Do not start from someone else's Reel and ask a model to “make it similar.”
- Add a contribution that would survive without the source. A line that is not a transcript of the picture. A comparison you set up. A product you have rights to. A character you invented. If removing that layer leaves the viral file intact, you have not edited it.
- Finish in an editor, not with a border. Captions, crop, and hook are yours when you write them. A white frame around a stolen clip is listed as unoriginal on purpose.
- Run volume as variants of your brief, not as a farm of their file. The AI Reel Maker is a production door for Reels-shaped cuts. The Instagram Reels audience page is the destination brief. The AI video generator is where you pick the row. None of those tools make a re-upload original.
Do not strip AI Info hoping recommendations will return. Do not credit the original creator and call it a material edit — the guidelines name that failure. Do not confuse a 30-day mix of original posts with one apology caption. The rolling window cares what you shipped, not what you pinned.
A generate is allowed. A templated farm is what recommendations drop. Write for the first.
FAQ
Did Instagram ban AI-generated Reels?
No. They drop unoriginal Reels, photos, and carousels from recommendations when those dominate an account. They do not name AI models. A Reel you generated and directed is work you produced. A Reel you downloaded and framed is not.
Is crediting the original creator a material edit?
No. Instagram lists “just crediting the original creator” next to borders, watermarks, and speed changes as edits that do not count. Credit is polite. It is not authorship. If the file would be the same without your caption, it is still their file.
How does an account get recommendations back?
When most of your recently posted Reels, photos, and carousels are original across a rolling 30-day period. Check Account Status, remove or stop shipping the unoriginal mix, and appeal if the call is wrong. Followers were never the surface that dropped. Discovery was.
Will the AI Info label kill my reach?
Not according to the originality documents, and not according to how Meta describes AI Info. Labelling is provenance. Originality is whether you made the post. Worry about the farm, the watermark, and the 30-day mix — not about hiding a generate. Disclose when the picture is realistic and synthetic; do not treat the badge as the penalty.
