Shorts ads will need 10 million qualified views every 90 days

From 1 Feb 2027, YPP members need 10M qualified Shorts views in 90 days to keep Shorts ads. Missing it does not exit YPP.

From 1 February 2027, YouTube will pay ads and subscription revenue on Shorts only to Partner Program members who have 10 million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days. That is a rolling maintenance bar, not a new way to get kicked out of YPP.

Long-form earnings continue if you miss it. Shorts sharing resumes when the window is back above 10 million. The operating number is the trailing 90 days, not a lifetime total and not the public counter on each Short.

YouTube said this in the same 10 August 2026 post that doubles YPP entry for new applicants. The two changes share a date and not a meaning. Entry is a door for people who are not in yet. This is a tap on the Shorts pool for people who already are.

Missing 10 million is not an exit

YouTube's wording is specific. Creators below the threshold remain in YPP and continue earning on long-form. Shorts revenue sharing automatically resumes once they cross 10 million qualified views again.

So the failure mode is not "we lost the program." It is "Shorts stopped paying until the window recovered." For a channel that is mostly long-form, that may be noise. For a channel whose ad line is the Shorts pool, it is the whole business, and it resets every day the oldest views age out.

That rolling behaviour is the part to design around. 10 million is not a badge you earn once. It is a run rate: about 3.34 million qualified Shorts views a month, three months running. A spike month that is followed by two quiet ones falls out. A stable month just under the line never turns on.

YouTube also said creators who already earn significant revenue from Shorts are unlikely to be affected. Read that as "if you are already well above 10 million qualified views in 90 days, this is not aimed at you." It is not a promise that a channel at 6 million will be held harmless.

Qualified is not the public counter

The 10 million is qualified Shorts views, not the number on the Short. YouTube already pays Shorts against engaged viewing, and it already excludes whole categories of view from the payable set: non-original uploads, invalid traffic, advertiser-unfriendly inventory, and several pool-accounting items that never reach creators. Shorts views that earn no revenue is the filter list.

Two further cuts sit on top after 24 August 2026. The public view now registers at the first frame. Earnings do not. Planning to "hit 10 million views" on the watch-page number is planning against a looser meter than the one YouTube will use. Studio's qualified / engaged Shorts figures are the ones that matter. The public total is exposure.

Number What it answers Use it to plan Shorts ads?
Public Shorts views How often playback started No
Engaged Shorts views How often someone stayed Diagnostics
Qualified Shorts views, 90 days Whether the tap is on Yes

If those three disagree, believe qualified. A format that starts playing and gets swiped can look healthy on the public column and do nothing for the window.

    Long-form is a different cheque

The maintenance bar is Shorts-only. It does not raise the long-form ad threshold for people already in the program. It does not pause memberships, Super Thanks, Shopping or long-form ads. A hybrid channel that treats Shorts as subscriber acquisition and long-form as the ad product can miss 10 million and still have a working YouTube business — provided the long-form actually earns.

The reverse is the trap. A Shorts-only channel in YPP today can be in the program on the current entry rules, then lose the only ad surface it has in February without losing the YPP badge. The badge will look like monetization. The Shorts line will be zero until the window recovers. Do not read "still in YPP" as "Shorts still pay."

YouTube said it will add other incentive programs for channels below 10 million — Shopping bonuses, brand-deal incentives, trend boosts — with details later. Do not budget against a program that has not been specified. Budget against the 90-day window, or against long-form, or against fan funding.

A faceless channel that is truly a Shorts operation should write 3.34 million qualified views a month on the wall and staff to it. One that can hold minutes should put the production hour on long-form and treat Shorts as optional. Splitting the calendar across both clocks, hoping one of them will cover a miss on the other, is how you end up below 10 million and short on watch hours.

    How to run the window

Count backward from 1 February 2027. The first 90-day window that matters is roughly November through January. Views that fall off in February are October's. A burst in August does not bank.

    Practical rules:

    • Track qualified Shorts views for the trailing 90 days as a weekly number, not a lifetime number. If you cannot see it in Studio, you cannot manage it.
    • Do not use the public counter as a proxy. First-frame counting will make that proxy worse.
    • Do not pause for a month if Shorts ads are the product. The window has no pause. A quiet month is a hole that takes another month to refill.
    • Originality still gates the views that count. Scaling a compilation format into 10 million public views does not produce 10 million qualified ones.

The rolling window is the operating number. Everything else is a screenshot.

    FAQ

If I drop below 10 million, am I out of the Partner Program?

No. You stay in YPP and keep earning on long-form. Shorts ads and Shorts subscription sharing pause until the 90-day qualified total is back over 10 million, then resume.

Is this the same 10 million that used to get you into YPP?

Same figure, different job. Until February 2027, 10 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days is one way into ads and Premium. From February it is also the ongoing requirement to keep Shorts ads for people already in. New applicants will need 20 million to enter on the Shorts path. Do not mix entry with maintenance.

Do public views after 24 August help me hit 10 million?

Only the qualified ones. A first-frame play that bounces is a public view. It is not a qualified Shorts view. Plan against Studio, not the watch page.

Will YouTube pay me something else if I am under 10 million?

It has promised additional incentive programs for channels below the line and said details will follow. Until those details exist, they are not a line item. Long-form ads, fan funding and Shopping are.
