Sora prompts that fail on Veo

Sora timestamp blocks, 20-second duration, and audio dumped into one paragraph break on Veo 3.1, Seedance, and Kling. Rewrite for the row you actually run.

    Versely Team••9 min read

A Sora prompt is not a Veo prompt. The three things that break first are timestamp blocks that assume a board, audio written as a full mix in one paragraph, and a duration the destination row does not sell. This page rewrites those three. It does not paste fake outputs. It does not claim a after-clip "looks identical." It shows what to change so the form can accept the job.

Veo 3.1 sells 4 / 6 / 8 seconds, native audio, 4K listed. Seedance 2.0 sells 4–15 seconds with native audio and references. Kling O3 Pro Text to Video sells 3–15 seconds with audio on the Versely card. Sora 2 Text to Video sold 4 / 8 / 12 / 16 / 20 seconds. If your old prompt still talks like 20 seconds of storyboard, it will fail on all three live rows — not as an error code, as a crushed, talkative, identity-free clip.

Timestamp blocks that assume a Sora board

Sora Pro Storyboard and a lot of Sora singles used a shot list inside the prompt:

[0:00-0:04] Mara in the red coat, kitchen, mug down
[0:04-0:12] She walks to the window, bus passes
    [0:12-0:20] Close-up, she whispers "stay"

On Sora, that list was either a board or a request the 20-second enum could attempt. On Veo, you have at most 8 seconds. The model will try to spend the brackets inside the seconds it has. You get a smear of kitchen-window-mouth, or you get the first beat and a hallucination of the rest. Seedance at 15 seconds can hold more of the list than Veo and still cannot honour a 20-second three-location board. Kling will spend motion on whatever it can parse and will not teleport rooms cleanly because you numbered them.

Rewrite rule: one location, one action, duration on the form. Timestamps are allowed on Veo as direction inside one take — "0–3s mug down, 3–8s hold on her face" — only when both beats fit the enum and share a camera. They are not allowed as a poor man's storyboard.

Veo rewrite of the block above, as three jobs, not one:

    • Clip A, 6s: Medium shot, kitchen, Mara in the red coat from the reference sets a ceramic mug on the walnut table. Slow push-in. Warm tungsten.
    • Clip B, 8s: Tracking from the table to the window as she walks. Bus light crosses her face. Same coat, same room beyond the glass.
    • Clip C, 4s: Close-up. She says: "Stay." Near-silent room, no music.

You cut them. That is the board. Movie mode is the other place a real board belongs. A bracket list in a Veo box is neither.

Seedance rewrite: if the kitchen-to-window is one move and you attach the Mara still plus a kitchen still, you may get it in one 12-second pass. You still drop the close-up whisper into a second generate. Do not keep [0:12-0:20] in the prose.

Kling rewrite: lead with the camera. Handheld track, kitchen to window, her red coat, mug already on the table. If the whisper was the point, this was never a Kling-first job. Do not encode three timestamps hoping Kling will edit.

Audio-in-prompt that the destination cannot spend

Sora had native audio on, and a silent prompt still received a track. The survival habit was to dump a mix into the last sentence: fridge, bus, score, whisper, spoon, neighbour TV. That paragraph is not portable.

Veo 3.1 wants sound, and it is the row this site treats as the dialogue specialist (48 kHz speech, per Magic Hour's tracker and WaveSpeed's 2026 roundup). It still cannot perform a verse, a bus pass, and a score in 8 seconds. Write one speech line in quotes, or write ambience, not both as a radio play. "No music" is a real instruction. Mood words ("tense, cinematic score") are not a mix.

Seedance 2.0 also generates synced audio in one pass, with phoneme-level lipsync in the family notes. It will try to say what you quoted. It will also invent a bed if you leave a hole. Name the room. Quote one line. Do not ask for a chorus.

Kling O3 Pro is audio-true on the Versely card. Write the sound you want. Still do not write a Sora-sized mix. Kling's value is the move. A paragraph of foley fights the move. If you needed a locked founder voice, generate a plate with "no speech" and add TTS, or pick Veo / a talking row. Do not hide a monologue in a Kling prompt and call it native audio.

    Rewrite pattern:

Sora-shaped audio tail: Audio: fridge hum, distant bus, soft piano, her whisper "stay with me until the lights go out," spoon against ceramic, a neighbour's sitcom laugh track.

Veo-shaped: Audio: fridge hum, cup on wood. She says: "Stay." No music.

Seedance-shaped, if the line is the product: attach the face still, quote the short line, room tone only, no score.

Kling-shaped, if the move is the product: Audio: footsteps, bus wash through the window. No speech.

If the old Sora take was famous because of a specific improvised line, that line is not in the prompt unless you wrote it. Native audio will not "remember" the old MP4. You either quote the line on a talking row or you give up the line.

Duration that the destination does not sell

Writing "20 seconds" or "slowly, over a long time" in the prompt does not extend Veo's card. The form enum is the duration. Prose cannot override it.

Old Sora habit Veo 3.1 Seedance 2.0 Kling O3 Pro
    4s / 8s single beat 4s / 6s / 8s — closest port 4–8s also fine 3–8s also fine
12s two beats Split, or 8s one beat 12s if one action 12s if one move
16s–20s scene Never one clip 15s max on this card; still one action 15s max; still one move
"Hold then a second location" Two generates Two generates unless one move connects them Two generates

"Slowly" is not a duration. If the action needs 20 seconds of real time, you are in two or three generates, or you are on a row that sells 15–30 seconds (Seedance 2.5 is the longer cousin in the catalog; this page stays on 2.0). Do not punish Veo for a 20-second brief.

Aspect is a control too. Sora took 16:9 and 9:16 on the card. "Make it vertical" in the prompt is weaker than setting 9:16. Same on Veo, Seedance, Kling. Set the ratio. Spend the words on the shot.

    Three rewrites, one job each

These are prompt conversions. They are not before/after frames.

    Job 1 — spoken close-up (was a 12s Sora).
Old: 12s 9:16, Mara red coat silver streak, kitchen then she looks up, "last one of the day — you got lucky," jazz, steam, 85mm.
Veo: set 8s, 9:16. Close-up, Mara from the reference, yellow kitchen practicals. She slides a cup and says: "Last one of the day — you got lucky." Shallow focus. Audio: café murmur, no music.
Why: one line, one setup, duration the card has. The jazz and the 12 seconds are gone.

Job 2 — product hold (was a 20s Sora with timestamps).
Old: [0-5] bottle on marble [5-12] hand turns it [12-20] label hero, rain on windows, voiceover about minerals.
Seedance: 10s, attach bottle still + hand still. Overhead to three-quarter as a hand turns the bottle on marble. Hold on the label. Window rain in the background. Audio: rain, fingers on glass. No speech.
Why: VO is a later pass. 20 seconds of three setups is a cut. The label lives in the still, not in the prose.

Job 3 — motion bumper (was a Sora "cinematic masterpiece" paragraph).
Old: Epic cinematic 16s orbit then crane then dolly, neon alley, she walks toward camera, orchestra swell, then a cut to her eyes.
Kling: 8s. Orbit 90 degrees around her in the neon alley, handheld, she walks toward camera. Audio: wet asphalt, distant traffic. No speech, no score.
Why: one move. "Then a cut to her eyes" is a second clip. Orchestra is a music row. "Epic cinematic" is noise.

After you rewrite, lock identity with stills. Sora prose that restates hair and scars on every line is how people fought a token. On Veo reference-to-video and on Seedance, the file is the token. Stop fighting it.

The Sora API sunset migration plan is dates and export. The re-run post is the folder workflow. This page is only the sentence-level break: brackets, mix, seconds.

    FAQ

Can I keep Sora timestamp syntax on Veo if I squeeze it into 8 seconds?

Only as beats of the same take in the same room. A bracketed location change is a second generate. If the timestamps describe two cameras, you are editing, not prompting.

Should every Sora prompt's audio line move to Veo unchanged?

No. Veo wants a short quoted line or named ambience. A full mix — score, neighbour TV, whisper, bus — will not fit 8 seconds and will fight the picture. Cut the mix. Put music on a music pass.

Will matching the prompt word for word reproduce the old Sora take?

No. Different model, different duration enum, no seed transfer, no storyboard token. Rewrite for the row. Attach stills. Treat the old MP4 as a reference frame, not as a reproducible job.
