How to label AI content on Instagram
Self-disclose the post and keep C2PA if you have it. Reels bonuses depend on that disclosure.
On Instagram, label the post (AI Info / Add AI label) and keep C2PA or IPTC if the file still has them. Reels bonuses depend on disclosure — a gate, not a CPM lift. If the featured person on the account is generated, also toggle AI-generated profile (Instagram, 31 August 2026). This page is the tap path. It is not Meta’s originality PDF.
Meta reads three things: a Content Credentials manifest, IPTC digital-source type on stills, and the self-disclosure control. Operate as if any one of them can fail.
Self-disclose the post, Reel, or Story
Meta’s in-app copy has used Add AI label / Label AI. The viewer-facing chip has been AI Info (formerly “Made with AI”). Same job: this media was generated or meaningfully modified with AI.
Posts and Reels
- Create the post or Reel from the finished file. Do not upload a draft you will replace.
- Find Add AI label (toggle). On some builds it sits on the composer; on others under advanced / options. Turn it on for photoreal generated or meaningfully edited media.
- Do not treat the caption “made with AI” as the control. Caption text is not the ingest signal Reels bonuses are built on.
- Post. Open the item as a viewer and confirm the AI Info chip.
Stories
- Share the photo or video to the Story.
- Tap Options, then Label AI.
- Turn Add AI label on.
- Confirm on the live Story. Stories die in 24 hours; the disclosure still has to be there for the hours they live.
When to toggle
- Photoreal person, room, or product scene that was generated.
- Real footage AI changed in a way that alters who did what.
- Realistic AI voice over a talking head.
When not to
- Camera original plus captions, crop, colour, or an AI-drafted script.
- Obvious graphics and animation no one would take as a recording.
- A human-on-camera account that only used AI to write the caption. That account also does not need the profile badge.
If the toggle is missing on your build, you still have metadata (next section) and you still have a duty to disclose realistic AI. Do not take a missing toggle as permission. Use a current app version. Schedulers that cannot set the flag have not disclosed.
A file from the UGC video generator is not labelled for Instagram on export. The composer is.
Keep C2PA / IPTC — and do not depend on them
Per the SocialScale Hub, Vexub and Fliki platform recaps (as of 4 September 2026), Meta requires labels, relies on C2PA/IPTC signals and self-disclosure, and ties Reels bonuses to disclosure.
C2PA (Content Credentials). If the generate still carries a manifest at upload, Meta can apply AI Info from that signal. Good. A re-encode in an editor that is not C2PA-aware strips it. A screen-record of your own Reel has no manifest. A download-repost has whatever the downloader left.
IPTC. Stills cousin. A generated product still posted to the feed can arrive with a digital-source type that says synthetic. Many Reels start as stills. If your stills pipeline writes IPTC and your video pipeline writes C2PA, keep both.
Procedure:
- Export from the generator in a path that preserves credentials when you have them.
- Do not “clean metadata” to look less AI. You are deleting the cooperative signal. Self-disclose anyway.
- If you must pass through an editor, check whether the export still has credentials. If not, the toggle is the remaining ingest path.
- Self-disclose even when the manifest is perfect. Manifests die. Bonuses depend on disclosure.
There is often no button to turn off a metadata-triggered AI Info chip while the credentials are still in the file. That is by design. Do not hunt Settings for a hide control. If the chip is wrong because the file was a camera original with leftover generator metadata, the fix is a clean camera export, not a policy argument in comments.
Article 50 is a different mark: a perceivable first-exposure line for EU viewers. AI Info that a muted autoplay can miss is a weak first-exposure mark even when it is a strong Meta ingest signal. Burn an on-file line when the cut would look authentic, then still toggle.
Profile badge versus post label
Instagram renamed the account-level control to AI-generated profile on 31 August 2026 (Instagram for Creators).
Turn it on when the profile features an AI-generated person rather than a human.
Leave it off when you are a human who uses AI tools as part of the process (captions, graphics, the occasional generate). Instagram’s post: those creators do not need the profile label.
Procedure:
- Profile → Edit profile.
- Toggle AI-generated profile (older builds: AI creator).
- Confirm the label on the profile and, where Meta deduplicates, on content that does not already have a media-level AI Info chip.
Reach consequence Instagram published: unlabeled profiles that feature an AI-generated person can be taken out of recommendations. Creators who proactively add the label “will not see a change to their profile’s reach.” That is a penalty for skipping the badge on an AI person, not a penalty for applying it.
Two switches:
| Control | Where | Who it is for |
|---|---|---|
| Add AI label / AI Info | Post, Reel, Story | This file is generated or meaningfully modified |
| AI-generated profile | Edit profile | This account’s featured person is generated |
Toggle both when the face is generated. Toggle only the post when the face is real and the scene is not. Do not toggle the profile to “look transparent” on a human account. False profile badges train viewers to ignore real ones.
If Account Status shows a recommendation limit you think is an error, appeal there. Adding the correct profile label is the other path back.
Reels bonuses: disclosure is the gate
The money sentence: Reels bonuses depend on disclosure. Vexub (2026): AI-generated content can be accepted; creation method is not the originality test; engagement is; monetization through Reels bonuses depends on disclosure. None of these sources publishes a labelled-AI bonus multiplier.
Operate:
- Disclosed eligible Reel: in the bonus conversation on the same terms as other eligible Reels.
- Undisclosed AI Reel: not in that conversation. You lost the pool before anyone argued ranking.
- Disclosed templated churn: disclosure will not make unoriginal work original.
Sensitive categories (political figures, medical procedures, financial advice, news) can see limited distribution in Vexub’s recap. Disclose early. Do not put a synthetic persona in an advice niche and hope the chip is a strategy.
Brand Collabs: tell the partner about AI generation before the agreement. That is a contract conversation, not the composer toggle — you still toggle.
After you post a Reel you hope is bonus-eligible:
- Confirm AI Info on the item.
- Confirm the profile badge if the person is generated.
- Keep the file’s credentials when you have them.
- Do not mass-post forty near-duplicates and call the toggle a plan.
If you need a studio seat to finish the Reel — captions out of chrome, pack still locked — sign up. Instagram’s labels still live in Instagram. Check safe area before you burn type; the chip and the buttons both occupy the frame.
FAQ
Is C2PA enough without the Add AI label toggle?
No. Keep the manifest if you have it. Self-disclose anyway. Re-encodes strip credentials, and Reels bonuses depend on disclosure, not on a file you hope survived ingest.
Do I need the AI-generated profile badge if I only caption with AI?
No. Instagram (31 August 2026): creators who use AI as part of the process do not need that profile label. It is for accounts whose featured person is generated.
Does the AI Info label cut Reels distribution?
The platform recaps (SocialScale Hub, Vexub, Fliki, 2026): the label is not a ranking penalty; unoriginal work is. Skipping disclosure is how you leave the bonus path, and skipping the profile badge on an AI person is how Instagram said it will limit recommendations.
