    Hit Shorts monetization milestones

Plan YouTube Shorts monetization: 1k subs plus 10M Shorts views in 90 days, or watch hours. Track engaged views, not first-frame vanity.

To hit YouTube Shorts monetization view milestones, plan for 1,000 subscribers plus either 10 million valid public Shorts views in the last 90 days or 4,000 valid public watch hours in the last 12 months, then accept the Shorts Monetization Module after YPP approval. Track engaged / qualified Shorts views, not first-frame public vanity. Shorts-feed watch time never becomes watch hours.

YouTube creators resources for Shorts monetization 1,000 subs plus 10M Shorts views in 90 days, or the long-form watch-hours path. Engaged views are the planning unit.

This page answers the long-tail brief: a strategy to hit the Shorts monetization view milestones without confusing counters or building a template farm. Parent thresholds for AI channels live in YouTube monetization for AI channels. Engaged-view money read: engaged views and Shorts revenue. Definition cutover: engaged views after 24 August 2026.

The bars that matter (today and February 2027)

Full ads / Premium eligibility (current, through 31 January 2027 for new applicants):

    • 1,000 subscribers, and
    • either 4,000 valid public watch hours in the previous 12 months, or 10 million valid public Shorts views in the previous 90 days.

Also required in practice: YPP available in your country, policy compliance, 2-Step Verification, advanced features access, AdSense for YouTube, and no active strikes. After acceptance, turn on the Shorts Monetization Module. Views before that acceptance do not retroactively earn Shorts ad share.

Expanded / fan-funding tier (unchanged in the August 2026 announcement): 500 subscribers, three valid public uploads in 90 days, plus either 3,000 watch hours in 12 months or 3 million Shorts views in 90 days. Fan funding and selected Shopping features, not full ad revenue.

    From 1 February 2027 (YouTube's 10 August 2026 announcement):

    • New applicants for ads / Premium: 1,000 subscribers plus 8,000 watch hours in 365 days or 20 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days.
    • Existing YPP partners keep entry status, but Shorts ads / Premium sharing needs 10 million qualified Shorts views in the trailing 90 days. Missing that pauses Shorts revenue sharing; long-form can continue; Shorts sharing resumes when the window recovers.
    • Fan-funding entry thresholds stay as announced (500 / 3M Shorts or 3k hours path).

Convert the milestone into a monthly plan

Write a date and a unit. "Get more Shorts views" is not a plan.

Shorts path (current 10M / 90 days). Roughly 3.34 million qualified Shorts views per month, three months running. The window rolls. A spike month that is followed by two weak months falls back out of qualification.

Watch-hours path (current 4,000 / 12 months). About 20,000 watch minutes per month, held for a year. Shorts-feed views do not count toward those hours. If you picked Shorts on purpose, stop spending the production week on a clock that does not apply.

    Path Planning divisor Window
Shorts (now) ~3.34M qualified views / month Rolling 90 days
Shorts (new applicants from Feb 2027) ~6.67M qualified views / month toward 20M Rolling 90 days
Watch hours (now) ~20k watch minutes / month Rolling 12 months

Hold the monthly rate, or accept that you are building a spike you will have to replace when the oldest month drops. To see how far your own subscribers, watch hours and Shorts views are from each bar, and the date you reach it at your pace, use the YouTube monetization checker.

Public views vs engaged / qualified views

On 24 August 2026 YouTube started counting public views from the first playback frame. Engaged views kept the stay / intentional-watch meaning. Earnings, YPP Shorts thresholds, and honest retention still sit on the engaged / qualified side.

Put two columns in the weekly sheet:

Column What it is What it is for
Public views First-frame starts, including swipes that never become a watch Reach, packaging tests
Engaged / qualified Shorts views Stay, on public Shorts The milestone

If public views rose and engaged views did not, the hook is being exposed and skipped. That is a first-beat problem, not an "upload more copies" problem. Copies of a skipped hook raise public views and train the inauthentic-content classifier.

Qualified Shorts views for YPP are engaged views on public Shorts. Private, unlisted, deleted, ad-campaign, and image-post-in-feed views do not fill the bar. Details: engaged views for Shorts revenue.

Strategy that actually moves the bar

    1. Pick one path. Shorts volume or long-form watch hours. Hybrid only as a deliberate phase change after the 1,000-subscriber gate, and only if the format can hold minutes.
    2. Optimise hold, not length padding. A 15-second Short that holds 8 seconds beats a padded 45-second file that loses the room at second two.
    3. Cadence you can edit. The upload count is the number of distinct cuts you can watch back, not the number a batch job can schedule.
    4. One idea per file. If open, voice, caption treatment, duration, and end card are identical, you are in the "generic or unoriginal templates" sentence even if the middle third changed.
    5. Human claim. AI can render the plate. It cannot be the only author of the point of view. Read inauthentic content and AI video earnings before you scale.
    6. Disclosure as a gate. Tick Studio's altered / synthetic control when the authenticity test fires. The label is not a ranking strategy. Skipping realistic synthetic disclosure is a YPP risk.
    7. Captions for mute hold. Burn readable type before upload with the AI caption generator. Mute scrollers do not wait for platform auto.
    8. Subscriber ask and series logic. Views without a reason to return leave you with a rolling 90-day number and no channel.

    AI-channel authenticity without self-sabotage

YouTube's inauthentic-content policy targets mass-produced, repetitive, templated uploads, not "AI" as a keyword. AI content stays monetizable when it carries the creator's own vision. A Shorts milestone plan that answers "how do we hit 3.3 million qualified views a month" with "ship 40 near-identical generates a day" is the trap.

Anti-template rules to write into the calendar:

    • Cap volume at what you can QA with sound off.
    • No health / legal / finance / political "expert" AI personas presenting as human experts.
    • Prefer demonstration, specific product handling, or a sentence nobody else in the niche is saying.
    • Label realistic synthetic media. Do not false-label camera originals that only have burned captions.

Production loop that stays above slideshow-farm territory: generate in the AI video generator, caption for mute hold, disclose when required, publish distinct opens.

    What I'd actually do

I'd put engaged / qualified Shorts views in the deck, not the public first-frame counter. Aim the monthly divisor at 10M in 90 days while the current bar still applies, and plan the February 2027 20M new-applicant / 10M maintenance split early if I am not yet in YPP. Volume only with authored Shorts: captions via the AI caption generator, plates via the AI video generator, policy via the inauthentic-content guide. Sign up when that loop needs a studio seat.

    FAQ

Do first-frame public views count toward 10 million?

Not as the earnings / YPP unit. Public views after 24 August 2026 can include swipes that never become a watch. Plan on engaged / qualified Shorts views in Studio.

Do Shorts views count toward 4,000 watch hours?

Views in the Shorts feed do not. The two paths use different clocks. Progress on one does not transfer.

Does an AI label block Shorts monetization?

No. Skipping disclosure on realistic synthetic media is the risk. Templated mass production is the other. The badge is not a third bar.

    Should I rush before 1 February 2027?

Only if you are honestly close to the current 10M / 90-day bar and want to apply under today's entry numbers. December volume will not invent a 90-day total you do not have.
