Grandfathered YPP still signs the 2027 terms

Existing partners keep the old entry bar but must accept updated terms in Studio. Unsigned terms stop payouts.

Grandfathered means you do not re-audition at 8,000 hours. It does not mean you skip the contract. YouTube is doubling the ads-and-Premium entry bar for new applicants on 1 February 2027 and leaving existing partners on the old bar. It is also putting new monetization modules in Studio and tying continued payouts to accepting them. Status without a signature is not a payout.

YPP entry doubles in February 2027 is the threshold rewrite. This post is the terms deadline. The grandfather is status, not a skip.

    What is actually grandfathered

From YouTube's 10 August 2026 blog and the matching Studio / Community notes:

Entry. If you are already in YPP, the 8,000 qualified watch hours / 20 million qualified Shorts views bar does not apply to you as a re-entry test. You keep the programme on the status you already have. New applicants on or after 1 February 2027 face the doubled bar. Fan funding and shopping thresholds stay where they are for everyone.

Shorts ads and Premium sharing is not the same gift. From 1 February 2027, members need 10 million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days to keep Shorts ads and subscription sharing. Drop below that and you stay in YPP, keep long-form, and Shorts sharing resumes when you cross the line again. That is an operating number, not an eviction.

Activity is a separate forthcoming rule in some explainers (a low bar of hours, Shorts views, or upload count, then a grace window). Treat that as something to read in Studio when YouTube shows it, not as a substitute for the terms click.

What is not grandfathered: the modules. To keep earning from the features, YouTube told partners to accept the updated Watch Page Monetization Module, Shorts Monetization Module, and where applicable the Commerce Product Module in YouTube Studio by 31 January 2027. The terms take effect 1 February 2027. If they are not accepted by then, payouts from the associated features stop.

That is the whole distinction. You are not being asked to qualify again. You are being asked to sign.

    What unsigned terms actually do

They stop the money on the modules you did not accept. They do not "quietly keep paying you because you were in." YouTube's Community note is the blunt version: accept by 31 January 2027 or stop earning from those features when the terms go live.

Studio will surface the documents. YouTube said it would notify by email and by Studio notification as the new terms roll out. Do not wait for a second reminder in December. Put a calendar event, a named owner, and a screenshot of the accepted state in the channel's ops folder.

If you run more than one channel, each channel is a signature. A network or brand with five YPP channels needs five accepts. An editor with access is not automatically the legal accepter; the person who can click through in Studio has to be identified before January.

Commerce Product Module is the one people miss because they think they are "ads only." If the channel has memberships, tipping, or shopping, that module is in the stack. Fan funding thresholds did not move; the contract vehicle still has to be the current one.

What to do this week, not in January

    1. Confirm YPP status per channel in Studio: ads, Shorts, fan funding, shopping, which modules are on.
    2. Watch for the terms notification. When it appears, read it. The 10 August blog is a summary, not the module text.
    3. Accept on a named date, with a second person on the account as backup if the owner is travelling on 30 January.
    4. Do not confuse this with applying. If you are close to 4,000 hours or 10 million Shorts views and not in yet, apply before February 2027 on the old bar. If you are already in, do not re-apply. Sign.

AI-channel operators who treat YPP as a set-and-forget badge are the people this will catch. The inauthentic-content policy is still the enforcement that can remove earning; the terms click is the administrative one that can stop earning without a policy strike. Both are real. Only one of them is a button.

    What the terms are not

They are not a raise. Premium Lite's 30/60 pool funding and 55/45 share are mix, explained in the Premium Lite split is not the YPP entry bar. Signing does not make Lite pay you 60% of a subscription.

They are not consent to ignore qualified-view definitions. "Qualified" is the new name for what used to be called valid public watch hours and Shorts views. The Shorts feed still does not become watch hours. The doubled bar for new applicants is a bigger number on the same two clocks.

They are not optional for "small" grandfathered channels. The deadline is the same. A channel earning fan funding only still needs the modules that cover those products.

    FAQ

If I never click accept, do I stay in YPP but without ads?

YouTube's notice is that you stop earning from the associated monetization features if the terms are not accepted by the date they take effect. Do not plan on a courtesy window. Treat 31 January 2027 as the last day to sign, and 1 February as the day unpaid features go dark.

Does grandfathering protect me from the 10 million Shorts view rule?

No. Grandfathering is about the entry bar. The Shorts 10 million qualified views / 90 days rule is a continuing earning condition for Shorts ads and subscription sharing, for members, from 1 February 2027. Long-form continues. Shorts sharing comes back if you recross the line.

Can a manager accept for every channel in a Brand Account?

Only with Studio access that can accept monetization terms on that channel. Check access now. A Google account that can upload is not always an account that can sign modules. Do not discover the gap on 31 January.

Are the new terms public in full today?

The 10 August 2026 blog and Community thread are the public summary. YouTube said the new terms would be made available in Studio over the following days, with email and notification. Read the Studio text when it appears; do not sign from a screenshot of the blog. The blog is the map. The module is the contract.
