IG cuts reach for undisclosed AI people
Instagram’s 31 Aug 2026 reach cut is for an unlabeled AI person on the profile, not for AI captions, graphics, or ordinary edits.
Instagram’s new reach cut is for an undisclosed AI-generated person on the profile. It is not a penalty for AI captions, graphics, photo edits, or creative tweaks. Label the persona with Instagram’s AI-generated profile label. Do not badge a human founder because a model wrote the overlay.
TechCrunch, 31 August 2026 is the news sentence: Instagram will start limiting the reach of accounts that feature AI-generated people without saying so. Instagram’s creator post the same day is the policy text. This page is the penalty. The rename of the badge is a different job.
What Instagram actually demotes
The object is identity, not tooling.
Instagram will “limit the reach of profiles that feature an AI-generated person and do not add this label.” Creators who add AI-generated profile “will not see a change to their profile’s reach.” That is Instagram’s pairing: hide the synthetic person, lose distribution; disclose the synthetic person, keep the ordinary recommendation path as far as this rule is concerned.
The Verge, 31 August 2026, is the surface list: unlabeled accounts can be kept out of recommendations to non-followers in Reels and Explore. CNET’s recap the same day adds in-feed suggestions. Owners can appeal a wrong flag. A Meta representative told CNET the label control was already available, and that hunting unlabeled profiles would roll through the following weeks.
This is not a deletion policy. It is not a demonetization schedule. It is not “AI Reels get fewer impressions.” It is a recommendation demotion for a profile that pretends the featured person is human. The line that already applies across platforms still holds (SocialScale Hub, Vexub and Fliki 2026 recaps): the AI label is not a ranking penalty; unoriginal, templated content is. Instagram can still suppress a farm of near-duplicates under originality rules whether the face is real or not. Do not cite the 31 August post as a blanket AI tax.
The trigger is the person the profile claims to be. Aitana Lopez–class accounts, fully generated influencers, a brand mascot that is the bio identity — those are in scope if unlabeled. A shop whose grid is products and whose Stories are the founder is not in scope because a still was generated on Tuesday.
Captions, graphics, and edits are out of scope
Instagram wrote the carve-out in the same post as the penalty, which is the part teams skip.
People who use AI to edit photos, polish captions, create graphics, or make other creative tweaks do not need the AI-generated profile label. TechCrunch repeats the list. The Verge’s read is that the change will not let you filter AI-assisted creative off Instagram. The reach cut is not aimed at burned-in captions, at a generated end card, or at an in-painted background behind a real SKU.
That matters because a lot of production now looks like this:
- Film or lock a real product still.
- Generate a motion pass on a catalog row.
- Burn captions and a price line.
- Post to Reels.
Step 2 and 3 are not “the profile features an AI-generated person.” They are how the file was made. If the talking face is still the founder, the 31 August penalty does not attach to the caption burn. If the talking face is a generated presenter and that presenter is the account, the penalty attaches until the profile toggle is on — and the file may still need post-level AI info besides.
Do not “fix” a caption workflow by turning on AI-generated profile. You will mislabel a human account. Do not “fix” a persona account by writing “captions by AI” in the bio and leaving the toggle off. Instagram asked for a specific control, not a caption disclaimer.
Legal duties sit beside this, not inside it. Article 50 (2 August 2026) still wants a perceivable deployer label on authentic-looking synthetic people, places, or events at first exposure. A reach demotion on Instagram is not that label. The disclosure template is still the on-file copy when the picture would pass as real in the EU.
How the penalty shows up
Treat it as a recommendations gate, not as a shadowban folk tale.
What you should expect if you are in scope and unlabeled. Weaker or no distribution to people who do not already follow you, especially in Reels and Explore. Existing followers can still be a path. That is why the Verge framed it as “posts won’t be recommended to non-followers.” Growth tactics that depend on Explore discovery are the ones that break first.
What you should not invent. Instagram did not publish a percentage reach cut in the 31 August post. Do not write one. Do not claim Reels bonuses move with this toggle; bonuses, where they exist, are a different Meta money path and a different disclosure. Do not claim Facebook Page reach is automatically clipped because the Instagram profile was flagged. Confirm the Facebook identity separately.
What you can do if flagged wrongly. Instagram says owners can appeal. A human account that was misread as a persona should appeal and should not “comply” by applying a badge that is factually false. A persona account that was flagged should apply the label rather than arguing that generated people are a creative tweak.
What still hurts labelled accounts. Originality and inauthentic-content rules. Watermarked re-uploads of other people’s work. Spam. Those policies did not retire on 31 August. A labelled AI persona that posts the same slideshow with the name swapped is still unoriginal work. The badge is not a licence to farm.
If you need a check before the file leaves the machine, run the pre-publish review for ratio, safe-area, captions, and SKU spelling. That pass does not set the Instagram profile toggle. It stops you shipping a broken Reel while you argue about identity.
How to stay out of it
Decide the identity, then match the control.
Persona account. Toggle AI-generated profile. Keep post-level AI info for photoreal media. Do not hide the person in the name and hope the grid looks “aspirational.” Instagram’s stated reason for the change is that viewers do not like finding out later. The reach cut is how they are enforcing that preference.
Human account that uses models. Leave the profile badge off. Caption, generate plates, edit. Label individual photoreal posts when Meta’s organic rules or Article 50 require it. The AI caption generator does not make the founder synthetic. Neither does Veo 3.1 on an eight-second product hold.
Agency running both. Put the rule in the SOW: which handle is a persona, which is a human, who has login access to flip the Instagram setting. Do not leave it as a caption the intern might remember. A scheduler post is not the profile setting.
Generate the clip in a studio that can fail over when Instagram’s composer is the wrong door. The AI video generator is that door on Versely. If you want the identity decision on paper and the file in the same week, sign up and keep the 31 August toggle where it belongs: on the profile, for the person, not on the caption track.
FAQ
Do AI captions reduce my Reels reach under this rule?
No. Instagram’s 31 August 2026 post carves out captions, photo edits, graphics, and creative tweaks. The reach cut is for an unlabeled AI person on the profile. Caption burns are out of scope for this penalty.
If I label the profile, am I safe from every Instagram AI rule?
No. Originality, inauthentic content, and per-post AI info still apply. The 31 August change only says labelled AI-person profiles are not demoted for featuring an AI person. Templated spam can still be limited.
Does Facebook inherit the Instagram reach cut automatically?
Not from the Instagram post as written. The 31 August policy is an Instagram profile and recommendations rule. Facebook Reels can still carry Meta AI info on the file. Treat identities per surface until Meta says otherwise.
